The American Foundry Society (AFS) and the Foundry Association of Michigan (FAM) sent a letter to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) Thursday urging her to end extended unemployment benefits.
In a letter obtained by Breitbart News, the two groups said the “number one issue” facing the metalcasting industry is “the inability to find workers” and said it “has reached a crisis level.”
According to the AFS and FAM, openings are “near an all time high” and there is a shortage of workers across several positions, including production workers, maintenance, electricians, patternmakers, and engineers. The groups said metalcasters account for 490,000 jobs in America and pay more than $32.1 billion in wages and benefits.
As a solution, the groups urged Whitmer to incentivize work by ending coronavirus-related unemployment benefits:
We therefore urge you to join at least 12 other states in ending participation in extended unemployment insurance programs enacted this year. Supplemental assistance adopted during the height of the pandemic in 2020, when there were no vaccines available, was meant to be short-term and temporary. Today, we hear on a daily basis from metalcasters who indicate that these expanded benefits are a key disincentive to work and are keeping able-bodied Americans on the sidelines.

Too bad Whitmer s voters want the goodies extended forever. No substantial change there until she loses the next election.
Very sad state of affairs when our nations peoples would rather sit and collect unemployment rather than get a job. I’ve heard and seen all the excuses but it’s well past time buying those.
Sorry to say it, but America needs bankruptcy.
The Left and its 1000 insane social-engineering schemes exist only because they have access to ever-increasing amounts of printed, fiat, manipulated money and the massive debt it supports.
It can’t go on forever, and IMHO, the sooner it crashes, the better - while we still have some remaining notions of of states’ rights, Federalism, and some memory of the 2nd Amendment
“…metalcasters account for 490,000 jobs in America”
I thought 100% of foundry metal casing jobs had left the USA. I am amazed there are still a half million jobs in that industry left here.
Biden will discover this and instruct EPA to shut the industry down.
I have my doubts that unemployment benefits have much impact here. If you’re a restaurant waiter or store clerk, yes. But skilled guys like these can make $30-50 an hour, they’re not going to care about $300 a week unemployment.
I suspect many skilled guys are over 50, and have decided to retire. They’re tired of working, and their investments have done well.
From China’s perspective this is perfect. We go to war with them and don’t have a workforce capable of producing war material.
Think about the huge number of Americans who lived through WW I, the depression, WW II, and the Korean War — it was only 36 years from our entry into WW I to the Korean Armistice. That generation grew into adulthood knowing nothing but tough times and want (except for the 20s). It created an American people with a whole different fiber and character than we have today. They didn’t have the luxury of worrying about nonsense such as selecting your gender or “birthing person.”
In the 80s I worked at a small mine and mill that shipped 300 tons a day of foundry sand to foundries in Cleveland. Fun times loading rail cars.
without getting into details
I can confirm this 100%
Foundry work is actually rather high skilled work(very high skilled in some jobs)
Many things can go wrong to make the castings scrap
Any idea how much sand is shipped today in the same regio?
“It can’t go on forever, and IMHO, the sooner it crashes, the better - while we still have some remaining notions of of states’ rights, Federalism, and some memory of the 2nd Amendment.”
Exactly. *BUMP*
“From China’s perspective this is perfect. We go to war with them and don’t have a workforce capable of producing war material.”
THAT, right THERE is a terrifying notion! Can you imagine no new i-phones because the materials would be needed elsewhere?
The Horror! The Horror!
We’re so screwed.
More likely these companies are skipping hte older workers or reducing salaries it hire junior folks. I bet they also are doing best to sever seniority and retirement, etc.
It was hard to find good workers even before all of this because wages aren’t what they used to be ...skilled workers retiring ...not enough young getting into the field ..etc
Panic is now setting in big time as demand increases...
can’t find workers to pass a simple test and/or drug test
recently had to make the math portion easier so more could pass
the ones that do pass everything are offered jobs..but only 25% take it..some of them soon quit
it is partly the companies fault: wages same rate as 2008, no benefits for 2 years
party societies fault: hey everyone go to college with useless majors and don’t get into skilled trades
party Bidens fault: $14-16 an hr sitting at home
Sounds like a failing business model and bad or cheap management. Poor pay, poor benefits will kill them,

The Left, with Covid as an excuse, have implemented a stealth MMT, with almost instantaneous disastrous results.
MMT perversely inverts the very concept of “money” simply being a reflection or representation of goods or services. With MMT they think the printing of money will somehow magically bring forth goods and services. It instead destroys goods and services as well as savings.
No idea.

and it is:
but trust me this company isn’t struggling financially
it’s a well known corporation...that has spent Billions buying back their stock in recent years
