More Republican States Cut $300 Benefits, as Jobless Claims Fall

More than three-quarters of Republican-led states plan to end an extra $300-a-week in federal jobless benefits early, as unemployment claims reached a new pandemic low, likely triggering a decrease in the number of benefits recipients this summer.

The development came as initial unemployment claims through regular state programs dropped to 444,000 last week, the lowest level since the pandemic hit in mid-March 2020. Weekly claims are still more than double their average of 218,000 in 2019 ahead of the pandemic.

This week Texas, Oklahoma and Indiana joined the list of at least 21 states that are cutting off access to federal benefits early after a much weaker-than-expected April jobs report sparked concerns of labor shortages. States are opting out of the $300 supplemental benefit, extended payments and benefits for gig-economy and other workers not typically eligible for unemployment benefits.

States have announced dates ranging from mid-June to mid-July for when they will stop processing pandemic-related benefits. That means nearly 3.5 million individuals could lose the $300 weekly benefits—which were set to expire in early September—beginning in mid-June, according to estimates by forecasting firm Oxford Economics.

Hopefully, some of the liberals who had moved into the conservative states will abandon them and move back to the holes they escaped from.

“abandon them and move back to the holes they escaped from.”

You beat me to it.

Human nature is a strange thing. People getting paid not to work correlates with higher unemployment.

Go figure!

You don’t even need an IQ of 50 to predict/expect that.

Now, get rid of the welfare state for all those who are not disabled or retired and the hyper corporate oligarchs wont need an open border anymore.

“cutting off access to federal benefits early after a much weaker-than-expected April jobs report sparked concerns of labor shortages.”

That’s a weird way to put it. Unemployment numbers are based on phone surveys that ask ‘are you working, if not are you looking’.

If anything a bad jobs report should mean too many workers and not enough jobs. I guess in these bizarro times it might not be the case though.

There’s always entry-level unfilled. Problem is the Mexicans have taken all those jobs. At least around here. All ‘real’ fulltime jobs have gone to H1Bs in the white collar area.

It’s been bad for a long time, wages have been stagnant for decades.

Most Mexican illegals can't even speak English to any level , let alone write English, let alone take entry level office or industrial jobs.
Reason freeloading Dems in Dem run states are not even seeking jobs is because the deranged Dementia Joe government is playing them plenty of free money (that they keep printing and borrowing) not to work, and a big percentage of them will make less money working than taking the free government money.

Hear, hear!

A black woman was on last night’s news crying that she was promised this freebie.

Our next door neighbor is begging for people to work.

Not anymore. My husband’s company is struggling to fill entry level positions at $15-20/hour + benefits. Thankfully, the people he has been able to hire have stayed due to a positive work environment.

It is really hard right now to find people to work when they can make more staying home. And I don’t know where the teens are that used to fill these types of jobs. I wonder if the decline of birth rates starting a few decades ago are being reflected in our labor force now.

The bigger problem to me is that the indians that run the entire IT field now are less likely to give you a job than an 1820s comanche.

And at least in Texas, don’t even both trying to find anything. When I was 16 the mexicans were just starting to take the fast food jobs. Now all yard work, roofing, construction, food, and retail are nothing but mexicans.

I have 2 over qualified sons, Eldest 50 best he could find was an assistance manager’s job in a cut rate store that looked like it was from Venezuela. Youngest 40 had 15 yrs OTJ training, certificates that don’t translate into State ones. Factory closed on April 3. Worked all positions, small town, not much available. Leaves Kroger’s, Lowe’s, and Walmart as biggest hirers. pop 15K. Navy Base doesn’t count. Wife has a 1st yr nursing course before money ran out, min wage jobs are all they can find, Min wage is NOT $15 a hr in Southern States.

Not enough Red-States must strongly move to get rid more of the unconstitutional Covid burdens/restrictions while restoring personal freedoms liberty and civil-liberties all across the board. They need to abolish the state income taxes, county/state property taxes, gas-taxes, while cutting much deeper into the welfare leviathan state.

That was "good" pay 20 years ago.

You don’t even know what kind of business it is.

It is excellent pay for positions that are normally filled by teens and nearly twice what other businesses offer for the same type of job in our area.

Hopefully, Hogan (Maryland) will stop taking this benefit by Memorial Day, or Ocean City will be a ghost town from some of its businesses being unable to run.

What the heck are you talking about?

I was discussing the difficulty filling positions because of the stimulus, I said nothing about the border.

But since you brought it up, FYI, my husband’s business does not use illegals to fill positions.
