A village of 1000 cannot support a police force due to an insufficient tax base. Suspect defunding whatever force they had was due to economic necessity, or unsupportable personalities on the force vs BLM sensitivities.

Liberals run on emotion and not common sense. They vote to take the locks off the jewelry store door then are surprised when it’s looted.
No one would ever mistake Pound with Alexandria or Fairfax. Wise County, Virginia, where Pound is located, voted 4:1 for Trump last year. Like much of Appalachia, it used to be Democratic but has moved into the Republican column in this century. This is also coal country, and the Federal war on coal has impacted this area. It is understandable that the locals thought they could do without police due to limited resources.
The worst part is the base emotion that drives them. Hate.
Well, that small town certainly discovered what happen when the “no police” thing becomes real. No real sympathy for the fools.
Strictly looking at economics, I’d suggest any small town or cohesive unincorporated community explore a contract with the county sheriff giving enhanced and dedicated policing. Some states also have constable subdivisions that are an option.
