For weeks now, President Donald Trump has been making the case that the coronavirus originated not in nature but in a lab in Wuhan, China. He said late last week that he had a "high degree of confidence" that was what happened (although he didn't specify why he felt that way) and on Sunday night in a Fox town hall offered cryptically "something happened."
Enter Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease and perhaps the single most prominent doctor in the world at the moment. In an interview with National Geographic posted on Monday night, Fauci was definitive about the origins of the virus which has sickened more than a million Americans and killed more than 68,000: "If you look at the evolution of the virus in bats and what's out there now, [the scientific evidence] is very, very strongly leaning toward this could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated ... Everything about the stepwise evolution over time strongly indicates that [this virus] evolved in nature and then jumped species." Now, before we play the game of "he said, he said" remember this: Only one of these two people is a world-renowned infectious disease expert. And it's not Donald Trump.
In short, Fauci's view on the origins of the disease matters a whole lot more than Trump's opinion about where it came from. Especially because, outside of Trump and his immediate inner circle, most people in a position to know are very, very skeptical of the Trump narrative that the virus came out of a lab -- whether accidentally or on purpose.

1) This is over a year old, so why are you posting it?
2) Despite all of the “reporting” on this issue, there is still no evidence that this virus was created in a lab.
For one thing, we do not have the technology to create a virus from scratch and make it have specific abilities. If we don’t have that technology, the Chinese, who steal their technology from us, certainly don’t have it.
We do have the ability to genetically alter viruses, and this is done in labs all over the world routinely for many purposes. However, to specifically alter it to have defined properties of a pathogen is beyond our ability. In order to be able to do that, we would have to understand everything about virus biology and human biology. That level of understanding is still decades, if not centuries, away.
Finally, if a virus were altered in a lab and escaped to cause disease, the evidence of its alteration would be obvious to anyone trained in molecular biology. Artificial nucleic acid sequences do not look like natural ones. With tens of thousands of scientists examining the sequences of SARS-CoV-2, someone would have noticed by now if anything were artificial in that virus. It’s like recognizing whether a photo has been altered, which is usually blatantly obvious.
Please stop posting this kind of nonsense. The rapid spread of Covid-19 misinformation and conspiracies among some Conservatives helped the Biden campaign produce very damaging memes to spread through social media. These memes were used to show how stupid and irresponsible Trump was in handling the pandemic, despite the fact that he handled it very well (at least, before the misinformation became too widespread and overly influenced him). Do you really want to contribute to the social media efforts to show everyone how stupid conservatives are? Do you really want to help put more communists into office?
Fauci made a huge mistake when he allowed NIH funding of what was essentially Chinese military bioweapon research. Sincerely doubt he knew at the time that he was actually funding a weapons program. He probably thought the Chinese might have some insights regarding coronavirus. Yet like most proud, overly praised men he could not admit his mistake and has since compounded his mistake with contorted pronouncements that have included perjury. People like Fauci, each with a fatal personality flaw have occurred throughout history and have altered events not for the better.
