Can’t they have a commemoration event, without paying people? Those making demands for more money can simply just not be there, while a commemoration event takes place. Maybe I’m missing something.

You’re missing that it was always about the money, but the folks in question are not good at negotiation.

(It's not a "slippery slope" if it was part of the program all along. )

“ Maybe I’m missing something.”
No one would show up if there was no potential to get money or break things. They don’t care. It’s just an opportunity.

Meh? I think it’s racist to build statues or commemorate events that remind minorities of “America’s racist past.” Let’s just forget it and move on. Cancel it henceforth and never speak of it again.

I'm always suspicious of those hosting the "commemoration" too. How much are they skimming off for parking, concessions, advertising and contributions but passing on only a pittance (if anything) to the actual victims who they use as props. I have similar complaints about all the "police and fire funds" who call asking for a contribution, but end up passing a fraction of a penny on the dollar to actual police charity work.
There are many grifters in the world and sometimes they fight each other to get the top of the skim.

(Police should refuse duty at NBA venues. Let them wallow in their desired chaos without police.)
