The virus has more than one protein. The “guts” of it are instructions to reproduce the entire virus.

The difference with mRNA vaccines is they only contain a set of instructions (the mRNA) which commands the body to begin assembling spike proteins via the ribosomes within the cells. The cells assembling these spike proteins are then sensed as ‘infected’ by the body, which mounts an immune response which then destroys the ‘infected’ cells. The part that is uncertain is just how far will the mRNA and spike proteins migrate in the body as there is evidence that the spike proteins are what cause respiratory issues in people.
