Elmbrook School Board votes to remove 'equity principles' from district's strategy plan (Brookfield, WI)

After weeks of deliberation and a yearlong effort by students and alumni of the district to address concerns related to equity and inclusion, the Elmbrook School Board decided June 8 to leave the proposed equity principles out of its upcoming strategy plan.

Discussions related to equity work within the school district will continue during the 2021-2022 school year.

The equity principles, which were drafted by the district's equity non-negotiable workgroup, said the district is "committed to equity" and is looking to eliminate opportunity gaps for all students. They also discuss removing barriers to teaching and learning and touch on recruiting and hiring "a talented and diverse workforce."

But critics of the principles have maintained that they are an extension of critical race theory, which has drawn intense scrutiny across the nation and state in recent weeks and months. This, even as the district has denied several times that critical race theory is taught in the district.
