and so universal income is exposed as a great ruse to get into everyone's bank account on a monthly basis, with that 'universal' income reduced by mandatory tax.

Another suggestion is a negative interest rate, that would take a percentage of every citizen's bank account each month.

I foresee a surge in sales of gun safes.

Give away program to keep them on the tax plantation while the rest pay for it. Would be nice to see the govt dissolved or secession within the US. They don’t have the authority to lead. I’m hoping the US states break away and form their own countries.

“To pay every adult and child in the United States a yearly income of $10,000 per year, the government would likely have to cut most non-health social spending programs”

Gina Martinez doesn’t grok Democrats or understand woke politics and vote-buying in the USA. The government will NEVER cut those spending programs. It will just lard on more and more “benefits” like this. They don’t care one whit if it causes the USA to go bankrupt or plunge into financial ruin.

Wait, the math is flawed. How does one take £116 per month, yet pay £1000? Is this UBI means-tested?

Residents in cities across the country...

Weird how a British online tabloid pretends it's in the U.S.

A universal basic income in the United Kingdom that would give every adult and child £12,000 ($14,900) per year requires a negative interest rate of 2.5 percent per month, according to the Centre for Welfare Reform.

Per month.

30 percent a year.

That would abolish private savings in no time. Then how will it be financed?

Before it was called “universal basic income” it was known as “welfare”

Ssuch an income would intensify poverty. A single elderly/retired person couldn’t make ends meet on $500/month.

So the government gets people dependent on universal basic income and what happens when they decide to pull the plug on the money?

What are all those dependent on that income going to do?

In a way soc sec does that. It is a fixed income and if your total income is above a set amount you pay 15% of your Soc Sec back to IRS. Lucky us we get to keep 85% of the SS. I bet their has been government programs studying the spending of SS over the years. And has lead to this new taxation scheme. Plotted for all instead of a few.
