The government of California is prepared to pay off past-due rent accumulated during the coronavirus pandemic as the state's eviction moratorium nears expiration.

Derived from several packages of financial aid distributed to states and localities by Congress, California has roughly $5.2 billion at the ready — an amount that Jason Elliott, a senior counselor to Gov. Gavin Newsom on housing and homelessness, said should be more than enough to cover unpaid rents, according to the Associated Press.

Newsom and lawmakers are set to hold meetings this week to discuss the state’s roughly $260 billion operating budget. One topic they are expected to broach is ....

Newsom's California has demonstrated a pretty poor track record on managing funds. Wonder how much will actually make it to legitimate landlords? Or, why people should even pay rent if the gubment is going to pay it for them?

This is one of the BIGGEST reasons they needed to steal the election - bailing out the blue states...

Yeah poor track record, but billions in printed money from the Feds made for a nice windfall! (Over $200 billion). Next budget crunch put off for a few years.

So Congress is taking taxpayer money and funneling billions of it to California.

Just so they can waste it on freeloaders.

I actually have mixed feelings about this. They caused it with their idiocy, they should have to pay those harmed by their decisions.

But unfortunately, all they are really doing is taxing ALL the producers more, to pay back some of the ones that own rental property. The only ones who really benefit are the deadbeats.

It ought to come out of the politicians and their enablers own damn pockets.

Kind of funny how California went from somewhere around 54 billion in the hole, to a surplus. Especially when the state was still locked down and not producing.

They have something like 55 billion surplus. I’d shore up pension funds. But he’s giving renters a free pass. I’d be pissed if I paid my rent all last year in California.

A lot of potential fraud here. Easy for a tenant and a landlord to come to an agreement and ask California to pay for the rent. Wink wink.

California has a $75B surplus. $26B of it from federal funds.

yeah. and what landlord will want to jump through all the bureaucratic hoops to collect that rent?

everytime you reach into the gov’t’s pocket, you’re asking for big trouble.

Wow. Even without fed money, they do pretty good. Most states wish they could have that kind of surplus. Mississippi for example has a 558 million dollar surplus. Lol.

So anyone who was able to pay rent during the pandemic and contentious is a chump. Wonderful.
