Wake is about 3000 miles northeast of Australia. Not much of a doorstep.

The entirety of Wake Island is a US National Wildlife Refuge with only enough infrastructure to support the caretakers and their seasonal staff.

Besides the instant environmental lawsuits that would happen it is close to 5,000 miles from Taiwan.

Okinawa is less than 500 miles from Taiwan and would send quite the message to the Chicoms were it to be used as the FOB.
