Was it fixed? Sounds like it wasn't.

It was probably too expensive to fix, so they let it go ... /s

Anyone who has dealt with condominium boards knows that they are often filled with cheap, useless @ssholes.
It's too bad it had to come to this, but we can always hope that the condo board members are among the casualties of this tragedy.

Heard a structural engineer on my radio program yesterday.
He said any building close to the ocean is vulnerable to corrosion - both metal and cement - from a constant salt breeze. The building was 40 years old.
Workers had also piled heavy construction equipment on the roof.
He also wondered if the main weight-bearing pillar weakened and the building pancaked floor by floor onto itself.
Still, heartbreaking for the victims’ families.

I remember a high rise building in Alexandria,Va that collapsed while under construction. The pools frame was dismantled too soon so the concrete spread and caused the collapse. 1973 or 74 I believe.

If I lived in the section that is still standing I’d grab my family and what I could carry, leave and don’t look back.

Looks like the engineer documented damage and said it should be fixed in the “near future”, but that’s pretty tepid and imprecise language.

I don’t think this was directly related to the collapse, but it could be indicative of lax maintenance in general.

“Failure to replace waterproofing in the near future will cause the extent of the concrete deterioration to expand exponentially,” And failure of government authorities to follow up on the engineer’s report and insist that the problem be fixed or the property condemned until it was fixed.

This is one of the reasons buying into a condo complex is a really bad idea.
A unit inspection will not tell you about all your risks.
And fixes can bankrupt.

It appears the underground parking structure collapsed and all the towers over that area fell . A friends condo in Tampa on the water had a similar issue that he caught and notified the Board .
Someone placed huge palm tree planters on the pool deck area and the weight caused the underground parking garage to crack .
His place was sold and he was renting it for a few months when he discovered this.
He told the city when he moved out since he didn't think the board would act .By the way he was a concrete engineer .
