Tolkien Society Goes Woke, 'Finds' Transgenderism, 'Antiracism,' and Queer-ness in The Lord of The Rings

This weekend, the Tolkien Society is hosting a virtual Summer Seminar, a short academic conference on a theme pertaining to scholarship about J.R.R. Tolkien, the British scholar and author of The Lord of the Rings. This year, most of the seminar has taken a clear turn for the “woke” — complete with multiple papers on LGBT themes and “anti-racism,” a movement inspired by Marxist critical race theory.

The Tolkien Society invited academics and others to submit papers to present at the seminar, specifically encouraging the “theme of diversity” and representation.

“While interest in the topic of diversity has steadily grown within Tolkien research, it is now receiving more critical attention than ever before. Spurred by recent interpretations of Tolkien’s creations and the cast list of the upcoming Amazon show The Lord of the Rings, it is crucial we discuss the theme of diversity in relation to Tolkien,” the society urged in its prompt for papers.

“Representation is now more important than ever and Tolkien’s efforts to represent (or ignore) particular characteristics requires further examination,” the society prompt argued. “Additionally, how a character’s identity shapes and influences its place within Tolkien’s secondary-world still requires greater attention. This seminar aims to explore the many possible applications of ‘diversity’ within Tolkien’s works, his adaptations, and his readership.”

The society asked for papers about “diversity,” and the presenters did not disappoint.

Leading off the discussion on Saturday will be Cordeliah Logsdon with “Gondor in Transition: A Brief Introduction to Transgender Realities in The Lord of the Rings.” Yes, the first speaker will discuss “transgender realities” in The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien, an orthodox Roman Catholic, would have been extremely surprised to discover that his work included “transgender realities.”

Tolkien himself said LotR was inspired by his Catholicism. Alphabet garbage turns everything it touches to crap.

Tolkein was an Orthodox, born again Christian...

Is that how we're referring to Catholics these days? Whoa!

I think we can tell where the LOTR Amazon series is headed, as if there was ever any doubt.

That’s what I think as well. I’m expecting it will be as an Orc is to an Elf.

Tolkein was an orthodox Catholic and LOTR was his offering to an increasingly paganized Britain
One thing I learned recently was that he’s responsible for the current fame of the poem Beowulf. It was certainly so influential that he seemed to have plagiarized parts of it in The Hobbit. However it’s easy to see it’s inspiration in the LOTR. Beowulf is a piece of evangelization literature. Tolkien had to have recognized it from the moment he began the translation. LOTR is also evangelization literature.

Tolkien’s son died recently. He kept Tolkien’s legacy pure and uncorrupted.

You don't want to go there. Too many rumors.

What's happened to Tolkien studies is what university literature departments do nowadays. They have run out of anything new to say, so they stick to race/gender/sexual orientation and related issues. Nobody is going to be made an exception.

Different son. I'm referring to Christopher Tolkien who was the one that oversaw Tolkien's literary legacy. He would not allow anything that in his view was not in line with JRRs vision. Transgender orcs would definitely not have gotten past him.

Tolkien would be quite surprised to hear that he had somehow written LGBT and transgender themes into his books, methinks.

Pretty soon they’ll concoct homo tendencies in C.S. Lewis writings.

Undoubtedly. As far as I know, Lewis was a bachelor for a great deal of his life, and you know what THAT means. /sarc

It’s a diversity forum call to papers so that’s what it’s supposed to do.

Yeah, well thankfully I don't need to give a crap about the "Tolkien Society" and its idiotic pronouncements. The professor's books are all I need to care about as far as JRR Tolkien is concerned - not Peter Jackson's movies, not whatever trash Amazon is going to emit, not blatherings by some ridiculous "society".

I am “unique.” I have never read any of the Lord of the Rings books nor have I seen the movies.
A recent book discussion I heard said Tolkien had Christian symbolism and subplot allusions in them.

This is in Christianheadlines.com

Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic who believed firmly in the values of Christianity, which is reflected in his plotlines, characters, and backstories. ... In the entire canon of Tolkien’s primary work, three characters emerge in the story as symbols of Christ: Gandalf, Aragorn, and Samwise Gamgee. May 26, 2020

Tolkien would NEVER approve. But his legacy will be smeared by this.

For some reason Frodo is left off those lists and Samwise Gamgee included. It seems obvious to me that Samwise was in the mold of a disciple.

This is Amazon doing this. Jeff Bezos wanted Game of Thrones for the series.
