It’s very difficult to break new ground.

Makes a good point that previous reporting had left out - the set fees in the “Fairness Act” legislation.

While I am in agreement that if the song writers are abd must be automatically paid royalties by over-the-air broadcasters (which they are), but the vocalist is not, there is some unfairness in the current arrangements. But whatever the solution, government set and mandated fees should not be part of it.

The problem is to find that unique combo of song-writing, musicianship and performance.

Two or three times a year I use a free Pandora account to discover new music. When I find a new act that appeals to me I dig a little deeper. It's astounding what you miss when you only listen to air-play.

Pandora is great for music discovery. Play a song you like and then it recommends newer songs in that same style.

I also use Sirius/XM for music discovery, they have much larger playlists across just about every genre and subgenre you can think of (they are a little weak with classical however).

If you want to hear something on demand, YouTube is the best for that. You will find songs that have been long out of print (not in catalog) and thus not available to stream on the major services like iTunes and Spotify. For the technically adept, you can capture that audio and put it in your library as an mp3.

IHurt, Cumulus, Townsquare, and the rest of the “Corporate Broadcasters” are now simply ATMs for the hedge funds, and the local advertiser suffers..

My new truck has a Sirius radio, but I haven’t even tried it. Didn’t want to get hooked on something that costs $25/month.

When I find something I like I buy it. That way I have it forever, in a place that I can find what I want when I want.

Most albums are less than $10 if you buy a digital copy. Some of the older stuff isn’t available that way. Last week I spent $40 on a used Gang Green CD. There was one copy available on Amazon and I had to have it.

I added another five records to the collection yesterday.

The USB stick that I use in the truck has just shy of 4800 songs on it.
