U.S. and Russia Refuse to Back Down as Black Sea Tensions Rise
https://www.newsweek.com ^ | 7/2/21 | BY DAVID BRENNAN

ATO and Russian forces are both refusing to change course in the Black Sea, where recent military confrontations have raised fears of a sudden violent escalation dragging in the U.S., Russia, the European Union and Ukraine.

In recent weeks, Russian forces have confronted British and Dutch ships sailing close to Crimean territorial waters, a region annexed by Moscow in 2014, and considered Russian by Moscow. However, NATO allies have never accepted the annexation, while also condemning the Kremlin's 2014 invasion of Ukraine.

Russia claimed to have fired warning shots at the British destroyer HMS Defender—a claim denied by British defense officials—and Russian jets reportedly conducted mock attack runs against Dutch frigate HNLMS Evertsen.

The Black Sea has long been a hotspot for Western-Russian tensions. The Ukraine crisis made it an even more potent flashpoint, with Moscow's seizure of the strategically valuable peninsula winning it a strong outpost in the Black Sea to go along with its existing naval base in the coastal city of Sevastopol.

No NATO country has any semblance of a vital national interest over there...

...nuff’ said.

Does anyone anywhere think these NATO provocations (or whatever you want to call them) will change Russia’s plans in the least?

As I see it, no good outcome is possible. Either nothing will happen or something bad will happen.

Wait....maybe it’s

Well, I won’t back down
No, I won’t back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won’t back down
No, I’ll stand my ground
Won’t be turned around
And I’ll keep this world from draggin’ me down
Gonna stand my ground

Looks like we’re about to find out what 30 years of military neglect means (while the Russians spent 20 years modernizing).

One shot, game over, and the US drops to #3 in the world pecking order (behind Russia/China).

Russia has nuclear weapons. The US has nuclear weapons. Neither side is going to do anything real. It’s all bread and circuses for each side’s respective idiot lapdog controlled media.

Am I going crazy with the heat or is it stupid to stand up for Britain when they have a defiant Muslim Mayor of London and have insultingly opposed President Trump and cheered Biden? Plus sent over Meghan to attack us.

And shouldn’t we be getting prepared to fight the Chinese and leave the Russians alone?

If only Russia and the US could join to fight the Chinese.

After a lifetime of strong anti-Communism how can I say these things? But I hate the Chicoms.

“with Moscow’s seizure of the strategically valuable peninsula winning it a strong outpost in the Black Sea to go along with its existing naval base in the coastal city of Sevastopol.”

We should have done something about this and taken a strong stand in 1783. Unfortunately, we were preoccupied with concluding the treaty of Paris ending the Revolutionary War. But really George Washington could have acted when he came into office five years later as our first President.

I agree. I get (and I’m sure you do, too) that Putin is not a nice guy. But he’s not Stalin. Putin is not planning to send Russian tanks roaring through the Fulda Gap. Putin is not interested in dominating the West.

So Putin is not a strategic threat to the West. But China is. And radical Islam is. Those threats also threaten Russia. If the US and Russia can’t be allies, at the very least we should be close associates based on common interests.
