U. of C. student dies days after being struck by stray bullet on Green Line: ‘He was a ball of light’ July 5, 2021 Denver native Max Lewis died days after he was shot on an L train. Friends remembered him as an outgoing and welcoming presence. Max Lewis didn’t have to make the trek downtown. The affable 20-year-old University of Chicago junior had the option to work from home for the competitive internship he’d landed at a Loop investment firm, but he “loved getting to know as many people as he could,” according to his best friend. “He loved the grind,” Zach Cogan said of his classmate and fraternity brother. Lewis was commuting home during rush hour Thursday when a bullet pierced the window of his train at the 51st Street Green Line station and entered his neck. He died at a hospital Sunday morning. Police say he wasn’t the intended target. Investigators have yet to provide a possible description of the shooter. It’s not even clear which direction the gunfire came from.

Rivkin said, despite his severe injury and suffering, Max was alert in the hospital. He wanted to know what happened to him and communicated with his family and doctors by blinking — once for yes, twice for no. That’s how Rivkin said Max spelled out a message on a letter board, which she wrote down. “If I have to live like this, pull the plug please. Seriously,” it said.
Max was taken off life support Sunday.
“He was incredibly brave to the very end,” said friend Zach Cogan said. “We really lost such an incredible human being who shaped everyone’s life. It’s just so senseless.”

If only Chicago had gun control. /s
Don’t worry. You can be sure that the gangster who shot him, that his life matters...
How is it that it is certain this was a stray bullet ?
He was sitting in an elevated train that was moving. Would be a hell of a shot if intentional.

I simply find difficulty believing stray bullet theories. My apologies if wrong
“I simply find difficulty believing stray bullet theories.”
About 30 years ago I was attending a fireworks show with my family. Suddenly about 15 feet away a man collapsed, bleeding from a small hole in his chest. The medics arrived and took the man to the hospital where he later died.
Turns out some idiot blocks away decided to crank off a round from a .357 magnum revolver. He was drunk, of course. IIRC he was sentenced to 12 years in state prison.
It happens.

Goodness
At least the perp paid for actions in case of your mention
That’s horrible…both the shooting and the fact that nobody was able to work with him to convince him from essentially committing suicide. Every day new work is done on repairing spinal injuries, even drastic ones, and the technology is incredible and constantly improving. Much work is being done on bridging the gap in a severed or severely damaged spinal cord. He would have been a perfect patient for this: young, healthy, intelligent and with a will to recover.
I’m sorry that nobody could have helped him through this.
Sad but not shocking or anything new. Cities attract some of the brightest and the best but are the domain of the most demented and deranged. There are many, unpublicized incidents like this horror. More now that the deranged actually have political and administrative power.
One of the local new channels (for Raleigh and Durham, NC) is warning citizens not to engage in celebratory gunfire. Seems the ferals like to fire weapons in the air.
I looked at my wife and said, Just like the do in third world countries.
Ahh no, he was not a ball of light.
Why do you have trouble believing in stray bullets? What’s not to believe?
All bullets come from an origination point .... therefore (imho) a bullet cannot be stray and I have other reasons also ..... but I would have to write a book in the post. Currently I’m too busy
