Clueless Hollywood Actor Discovers Trump Supporters are Real People: ‘Eye-Opening’
The Spectator ^ | July 12, 2021 | C. Douglas Golden

Actors are strange folk and generally out of touch, but Matt Damon’s cluelessness about Donald Trump supporters might really take the Hollywood cake.

The actor — known for “Good Will Hunting,” “Saving Private Ryan” and the “Bourne” franchise, among other roles — is an outspoken leftist even by the standards of Tinseltown who had to stoop to play a Trump supporter in his latest film, “Stillwater.”

The movie sees him playing an oil rig worker whose daughter gets caught up in a European murder case a la Amanda Knox, according to Reuters.

How do you play a Trump supporter? This should be a rhetorical question. And yes, you might think that’s easy for me to say as a Trump voter, but pay me enough money and I could play a Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton voter. Heck, if you really want to bankroll me, I could pretend I was an Eric Swalwell volunteer. (I’d need Chinese spy money for that, but it could be done.)

Damon, a professional actor, needed to live with Trump supporters to get the role down. In a news conference at the premiere of “Stillwater” in France at the Cannes Film Festival, Damon said he spent an “absolutely critical” amount of time with MAGA folk.

“Being invited into their homes, into a backyard barbecue, a guitar comes out and they start singing church songs. It’s a very specific place. And very different to where I grew up,” Damon said at a news conference after the Thursday red carpet premiere of “Stillwater,” according to Reuters.

“It was really eye-opening for me.”

This, in other words, is an obscenely rich thespian who’s one of the most influential entertainers on planet Earth and he comes across as a guy who just discovered a cohort of his fellow countrymen, 74 million of whom voted for the incumbent president during the 2020 election, actually exist.

Not only that, he treats them as if neon green hominids with goatees and Oakley shades were living in his backyard for 20 years and crawled up on his porch one day to have a beer, strum a guitar and sing “How Great is Our God.”

Damon’s character is an oil-rig worker who has to travel to Marseille, France where his estranged daughter is locked up for killing her roommate.

“One of the biggest laughs at the movie’s Thursday night premiere came when Damon’s character is asked by a French woman if he voted for Donald Trump. He did not, he responds, but only because a prior felony kept him from voting at all,” Variety reported.

Variety’s description of Damon’s preparation seems to indicate the immersion was wholly unnecessary. The Hollywood trade magazine said he “came to appreciate the smallest details — from wearing a specific kind of blue jeans treated with fire retardant, which ‘changes the way these guys walk.’”

PBS Condemned Over Playing ‘Black National Anthem’ for Fourth of July “They all have goatees, the sunglasses,” Damon said. “They’re not six-pack ab guys, but they’re strong. You go to their barbecues and a guitar comes out and they start singing church songs.”

The “church songs” really had an impression on Damon. This is a 50-year-old man — one of the most influential and respected members of our celebrity caste — standing in amazement that these guys were singing religious tunes and not Springsteen, the Strokes, Ed Sheeran or Pearl Jam. In his half-century on earth, he hasn’t encountered organized religion. Maybe he assumed the worship part of church service was done in mime.

Another thing Damon wants you to know? They’re not bending the knee to Hollywood.

“These guys don’t apologize for who they are,” Damon said

Why would they have to?

Furthermore, Damon said he and “Stillwater” director Tom McCarthy “were invited into the break rooms and backyard barbecues of the real men who inspired the character” Damon played.

“They’re in the oil business. Of course he voted for Trump,” Damon said of his goateed character. “These people were wonderful to us, they really helped us. It was eye-opening for me.”

And how does this film treat said Trump supporters? Consider the fact it got a five-minute standing ovation at Cannes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That’s not exactly MAGA territory.

Hollywood is so beyond out of touch that Matt Damon spends time assuring reporters at a news conference that oil-industry Trump supporters aren’t that bad.

Is Hollywood out of touch?

Sure, they might have goatees and the church songs are a little grating, but they’re not terrible or anything. And they’re not apologizing — although it’s bizarre that the topic of an apology would even come up.

If there’s anyone who needs to apologize here, it’s Matt Damon. Don’t expect it to be coming any time soon, though.

The little twerp has been living in the Hollyweird bubble for so long, he was shocked that not every American was a God-hating Marxist millionaire.

You lie! They sucked your brains out and replaced it with a red MAGA brain! And you didn’t even notice! NYAHAHAHAHAHA! Bring in the next Hollyweirdo. The sedative in the BBQ sauce is just exactly right. MAGA!

Shades of Pauline Kael, who said after Nixon crushed McGovern in 1972:

“I live in a rather special world. I only know one person who voted for Nixon. Where they are I don’t know. They’re outside my ken. But sometimes when I’m in a theater I can feel them.”

The Left lives in a protected space due to our media lying by omission.

It’s been true forever — if you ask a Conservative to explain the Liberal position on Climate Change, Sustainable energy, Abortion, or taxing the rich, we can do a fine job. We understand them. We just disagree.

Ask a Liberal to explain a Conservative viewpoint? Well, Conservatives just hate everyone. Especially women and minorities. And we are filled with hatred because that’s what Christianity is all about. That explains all of our political positions. Right??

My late mother-in-law had a similar reaction when she got to know a few ‘shvartzes’. In shocked disbelief she exclaimed, “they’re human beings!” What else was she expecting? Same thing with this bozo.

On the bright side, Nick Nolte was pretty good in the Prince of Tides. Even if he did have to dry-hump Barbara Streisand.

Matt has been a known quantity for a long time. Same thing with his pal Bem Affleck, that guy having a mid life rerun with Jlo. Jlo, who was just dumped after a five year fake engagement. They live in their own little world, surrounded by Yes Men who want to stay employed.

Robert De Niro and George Clooney were unavailable for the part so Mitt Damon filled in.

People like Damon weren't bought up, they were dragged up.

It infuriates me when some Leftist twit encounters real patriotic Americans much like an anthropologist on a field study of some kind of fauna and discovers “Hey, they're just regular people!’’.

I could care less of what some spoiled Hollywood degenerate thinks of conservatives.

I gave up on putting money in Tinsletown’s pocket a long time ago.

I guess that’s what they mean by “culture” shock”. I’ve done a bit of traveling throughout the US and parts of Canada. And although I always took note of the cultural differences, I was never surprised or put off by them. If there’s one benefit to growing up in NYC, it’s that you’re exposed to the good, bad and ugly of various peoples amd cultures. As a result, nothing shocks you.

“The little twerp has been living in the Hollyweird bubble for so long..”

Longer than that.
Matt Damon was born and raised in Cambridge, MA, and his mother was one of those “child education specialists”. Poor Matt probably never had a chance.

Don’t forget that not only do we hate any and every kind of minority of any kind (ignore inconvenient facts like marriages, lifelong friendships, etc that might refute that narrative), but we also are all uneducated (ignore the grad degrees) shoeless (ignore that there are plenty in the upper middle class who built businesses etc), backward hicks who have never seen the anything but the little mountain hollows and swamps we reside in (nevermind that plenty of us have lived abroad and/or speak foreign languages).

Leftists have assured me of all of this.

They are not only morally superior but also intellectually superior. Just ask them.

Exa3... I’ve never been to a BBQ where a guitar was broken out to sing church songs either.

My guess is the Maga supporters were actors that played one o. TV.

I take back the ‘Meh’....( a little)

I’m convinced what these good folks were trying to do with Matt is introduce him to the Living God.....
....they were singing church songs cause that’s what they do....
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sung ‘How Great is Our God’...(Chris Tomlin)

TV would like to convince its audience Southerners are beer guzzling, stomach scratching, ignorant hay seeds or even worse.....Mama June types!...meh
No doubt Matt met some genuine Bible believing salt of the earth souls who upset his preconceived ideas.

Matt Damon is twice-blind. Before he went Hollywood blind, he was Mass-hole blind. He doesn't see through windows as they're all mirrors to him.

He chose a profession where everything exists only in a script or on a stage. There is no reality.

Actually, it's beyond blindness; it's narcissism.

I'm a MAGA guy, go to Church and barbecues, but unless it is a Church sponsored event, I've never seen people singing "Church songs" at a cook out.

At a Church event, no one eats until the Priest gives a Blessing and we all recite a prayer.

If it's a volunteer fire hall event {yep, we still have volunteer firemen err, fire persons}:) there is generally no formal prayer {unless a person of the cloth is present}.

I attended a volunteer fire department fair in Mineral, VA on Saturday, and it was wonderful. Corndogs on a stick, fattening food, a few carnival rides for the kids, and some games to raise money.

Small town USA in southern Virginia, and there were people of all colors and lot's of local cops.

Everyone was having a good time.

If you go to a neighborhood cook out, it depends if a prayer is said and if later in the evening, some one sings, it's because they have had a few too many, and generally it's not Church songs.

Actually, I’ve been to places where the guitar comes out, or someone starts playing the piano, and everyone starts singing. Why?

Because some of my family members play in worship bands, and those are the songs they know by heart. And they know that several in the room know the words by heart. Any musician will tell you that although they can play many songs, they only know a few by heart they can play anywhere without music.
