Lots of people died back then, especially indigenous folks. The churches took care of the sick and also respectfully buried the ones who died.
For this the worldly people think they have some cause against churches.
Both of my grandfathers served in WW2. The one who served in the Atlantic Theater had nothing but high praise for the Canadians he sometimes served beside. Evidently Canada today doesn't have a backbone left to fight totalitarianism.
Some of the churches burned have been Coptic Orthodox buildings of Egyptian Christians who fled persecution in the 1960s and had no connection to the schools.
