Spain's current left-wing government has launched moves to address the Franco era, in an approach it calls "democratic memory". It has included the exhumation of the dictator from the Valley of the Fallen mausoleum, where he was buried in 1975, and funding the opening of mass graves to identify victims of the dictatorship.

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. Erasing the past so the left is always right, however , is routine.
It’s not like the American civil war where people who don’t have any living relatives and were born long after anyone connected to the war was dead. Spaniards still have neighbors who tortured them when Franco was in power and relatives that are in unmarked mass graves. The road close to our house, the N340, was the main route for refugees trying flee the assault on Malaga. They were still finding bodies in the 1960’s.
Yes, the Nationalists were very effective in dealing with the reds. Unfortunately they allowed so called democracy to return and Spain has become a sewer. With the left the foot has got to be kept on their throat forever.
Beat me to it. The term has been turned into a synonym for “evil, reactionary dictatorship.” They are trying to do the same with the word “Patriot”.

It’s a fine statue and Franco was good for Spain.
He was smart enough to keep Hitler at arms length and Spain out of WWII.
He allowed his most hard core anti-communists to form and serve in the “Spanish Blue” division on the Axis side, in Russia.
Placating Hitler thereby and removing them from the Spanish political landscape for the duration
Imagine Spain on the Axis side and a much longer war if Gibraltar, Malta and Egypt had fallen.
Allied landings in Spain, Bomber Command and the Eighth Air Force leveling Spanish cities.
Perhaps the A-bomb would’ve been used in Europe too.
Like calling the soldiers who went on Omaha Beach, the “original Antifa”.
Franco also saved thousands of Jews by allowing them safe passage into Spain.
