A major internet outage has affected the websites of major retail, financial, logistics and travel websites, and appears to be affecting 911 services in several areas.
Down Detector, a service that detects whether websites are working properly or not, began reporting a series of at least 50 major website outages shortly before 12pm EST on Thursday.
Among the potentially affected websites were Costco, Airbnb, US Bank, UPS, Fox News, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, AT&T, Groupon, Expedia, HBO Max and TikTok, according to Down Detector.

I would think organizations representing key infrastructure would have alternative means to access the Internet: a backup ISP, satellite, phone modems, whatever, or all the above. It’s the equivalent of having a generator kick in if the power goes out.
I think this is a DNS problem and not a problem with the individual companies/websites.
