General Motors is recalling tens of thousands of Chevrolet all-electric Bolt hatchbacks for the second time in less than a year because of a potential fire risk.
The company made the move on Friday after two Bolts caught fire without impact recently. GM is confirming that at least one of the Bolt fires was battery related and happened despite the owner getting the fix from the first recall.
This time, GM said it would recall all 2017-19 model-year Bolts. In total, the recall involves 68,000 vehicles globally; of those, 50,925 are in the United States. The vehicles contain high voltage batteries produced at LG Chem’s Ochang, South Korea, facility.
As part of GM’s commitment to safety, experts from GM and LG have identified the simultaneous presence of two rare manufacturing defects in the same battery cell as the root cause of battery fires in certain Chevrolet Bolt EVs," GM spokesman Dan Flores said in a statement. "As part of this recall, GM will replace defective battery modules in the recall population. We will notify customers when replacement parts are ready."

GM recommends :
Return the vehicle to the 90% state of charge limitation using Hilltop Reserve mode (for 2017-2018 model years) or Target Charge Level mode (for 2019 model year), or visit a dealer to make that change.
Charge the vehicle after each use and avoid depleting the battery below 70 miles of remaining range.
Park the vehicle outside immediately after charging and do not leave the vehicle charging overnight.
Customers who have not received the advanced diagnostics software should visit their dealer to get the update. After obtaining the software, limit the state of charge to 90% and follow the advice above.

The FD is dispatched when accidents are known to include an EV with the EV being the priority.
They got the knockout game, we got the change at a liberals house game.
That’s going to take a heck of an extension cord.
I was in South Africa in ‘75, and the jingle lyrics were “Braaivles (pronounced bryflace),rugby ,sunny skies and Chevrolet. The first term is Afrikaans for burned/grilled meat.
Gee, that would be terrible if the snooty lib neighbor’s “No Hate Here” and “Terry! (McAwful)” signs got burned up when his Volt goes off.
Get a bolt and get screwed.
I was involved in a program that used early lithium batteries. They scared experienced EE’s more than capacitors the size of suitcases.
In addition to never charging the vehicle past 90 percent, Chevrolet would also like customers to ensure Bolt batteries are not depleted below 70 miles of remaining range ... It sounds like GM wants to keep these cars from spending any more time plugged in than absolutely necessary.

your house will burn down, but it will burn down for a good cause.
EV’s are about the stupidest thing to ever be created for anything other than extremely specialized use. The damage that is going to be caused to our environment and our country from these things is so extreme. Of course so many fools are always waiting to hear the pied piper so that they can follow mindlessly.
Well I have a phone. It tells me to unplug it because it’s charged. I know damn well that there has been plenty of news about exploding lithium batteries in laptops. I recall a few about phones too at one time.
Here’s a search for “exploding lithium batteries” https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffcm&q=exploding+lithium+batteries
Lots of info from many different types of outlets. It’s also happened with vape batteries and RC batteries.
It only happens when they’re overcharged or with low quality batteries but all that takes is a charger malfunctioning or buying an aftermarket battery from china.

Tell me more curmudgeon.
General Motors, dvancing planned obsolesence to the next level
“ EV’s are about the stupidest thing to ever be created for anything other than extremely specialized use.”
I have a Mach e on order. For a year now. Let me tell you why, in order of importance.
1) Tax breaks
2) A short commute
3) Home charging far cheaper than buying gas
4) The “Ford Option” financing that will let me turn the car in after 3 years. No battery worries. I might not have to change the tires or brakes the whole time I own it.
5) Not getting rid of any of my ICE cars.
obama pretended to drive a Bolt. If only he had bought one and.....

You don't seem to have a lot of faith in the EV technology as it currently stands.
“ You don’t seem to have a lot of faith in the EV technology as it currently stands.”
I believe I have an appropriate level of “faith” in EV tech. It certainly wouldn’t be my only vehicle.
