Illinois employers are hurting from a lack of workers while the state unemployment rate remains high. When a parent can stay home and make $51,627 on unemployment, the prospects of getting more workers back to work this summer appear dim.
Illinois’ unemployment rate rose to 7.2% July 15, the 8th worst in the nation, at the same time employers are having trouble filling job vacancies.
The average Illinoisan earns $55,770 a year at work. If that person stayed home with their kids and collected unemployment, it would be $51,627.
For a parent earning around the state average, that’s $4,000 less for deciding not to work, and with no child care or transportation expenses.
Crunch the numbers another way and add federal stimulus, and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce calculated an unemployed worker receives $35 an hour.
“In Illinois alone, there are tens of thousands of unfilled jobs. Employers are offering substantially higher wages, employment bonuses and taking other steps to encourage people to return to work,” the chamber wrote in an open letter to Gov. J.B. Pritzker. “The problem is employers cannot compete with the approximate $35 per hour unemployed workers have received over the last four months as a result of enhanced UI benefits, tax credits, and stimulus payments.”

My last year of teaching I faced a similar situation. Doing the math, I figured I was making an extra $100 a month by going to work over what my pension would be. Unlike many, I wan’t ‘sick of teaching’, but it made no financial sense to go to work for an extra $100/month.
And as a plus, if a sub a couple of days a month, I make up the difference.
F*** this state!
With those numbers I don’t blame the workers either.

Most families depend on two incomes now in order to provide for a decent lifestyle. I blame Congress for raising our taxes and the women’s movement for telling women they had to have a career if they wanted to be “fulfilled.” They worked in tandem and I’m starting to think it wasn’t a coincidence.
I'm thinking any person with a shred of self-respect and decency.
I've been working since I was 14 years old. I do not appreciate able-bodied people sitting home on the dole and relaxing, sponging off of my hard work.

With few exceptions, poverty in the USA doesn’t exist. The government pays the “poor” enough to make them middle class. Work harder slaves, the “poor” are depending on you! Never mind they live in a house like yours, drive a nicer car than you, have the latest iPhone and wear $200 sneakers!

When you collect Unemployment you are supposed to be looking for work. You can’t “voluntarily” collect Unemployment because you just don’t want to work, right?
Unemployment is not available to those who were Fired for cause from their Jobs. It is for People who were laid off due to no fault of their own, AKA the Kung Flu shutdowns.

It USED to be that way. IIRC one had to be laid off or fired to be eligible for unemployment. Now you can quit for nefarious reasons and collect.

About 99% of us, IMHO, knew of people up to the late 1970s (feminism) who had a father who went to work and came back to a house they owned with food and education supplied by the father’s income. That is almost impossible today without a two income (or more) family involved. And how many own a house versus rent an apartment lately? Until housing crashes they are pretty expensive and last one day on the market.
All the Blue States are doing this to break/destroy American small businesses.

This is one of the first things Marxists do, destroy the middle class so there is a great leveling of society to make it easier to control all the poor by making them dependent on gov’t handouts for their very survival. Ruled over by the ideological rich elites of course.
