How Provincetown achieved a 114% vaccination rate (but is now a hotspot)?

As cases continue to rise from the Provincetown Fourth of July weekend COVID cluster, Cape Cod Democratic Sen. Julian Cyr said the reason COVID-afflicted residents continue to maintain mild symptoms is due to the town’s 114% vaccination rate.

How is the vaccination rate over 100%? This is comparing the number of residents who used their Provincetown address for their vaccination to the latest Census figures, which showed a lower number.

The latest figures, from the 2010 Census, list the year-round population of the community at 2,642.

Cyr estimate the popular summer destination currently has a population of around 60,000 and that the seaside Cape Cod town has the highest vaccination rate in the state.

“You have a community that continues to be proactive about their health,” said the senator.

On Tuesday, Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported that 256 positive COVID cases stem from Provincetown’s crowded Independence day weekend, 109 of which reside in Barnstable County.

To a certain extent, what we're seeing in Provincetown is the impact of Risk Compensation or the "Peltzman Effect", in this case where people who got their COVID19 shots become "less careful" because they feel more protected.

In a recent article on weddings and vaccines it was clear that while the bride and groom wanted to be 'safe' from people who didn't get shots, they had every intention of their "protected" friends and family going back to normal, i.e., dancing, drinking, driving etc.

At least in Provincetown, the MSM can't blame the "anti-vaxx" Trump followers. It's likely that it's the people who got their shots that are infecting everyone.

If this bug will be with us forever (regardless of shots or herd immunity, just like influenza), we need to reject the inevitable MSM/govt push for an endless life of indoor masks, social distancing, shutdowns etc as part of a "risk elimination" mindset.

You cannot ELIMINATE the "systematic risk" inherent in a nation like America, where we have Constitutionally-guaranteed freedoms and the individual and not the state as its foundation.

In investing, there is a concept of risk-minimization whereby you lower your risk of loss or volatility by spreading your eggs across several baskets. However, one risk you cannot diversity away is the "systematic risk" or the risk inherent in the system...call it market risk or whatever, the basic reality is some baseline level of risk will ALWAYS exist, and you can't avoid it.

Laws that support, life, liberty, and property are right and proper. Some laws act as a deterrent and will stop people on the margin from doing bad things...this is akin to diversifying away the non-systematic risk.

However, at some baseline level, in a relatively free society of 330MM people, if this bug is with us forever, you cannot live under constant lockdown. We cannot eliminate the systematic risks in a free society. Some folks won't get the vax. Some folks won't wear masks. People won't wash hands and will make out with strangers at the bar.

That is life. We need to learn to deal with the fact that some of our neighbors will be less careful, and our job is to manage our own lives and MYOB.

Sounds like a lot of people moved out of Boston and NYC to Provincetown, if their pop is 14% above just last year’s Census.

That’s possible if people from other towns got vaccinated here. Not everyone gets vaccinated in the town they live in.

Could be some people there got two vaccine courses (2 pfizer, 2 moderna, and the J+J). Some were bragging about it on instagram showing three seperate vaccine cards.

Nope. They do have 3 people in the hospital now and 500+ people with no symptoms or cold-like symptoms who are recovering just fine. So time to mandate face diapers again.

Not that I could see.

And that's my point.

The bug seems to be morphing from something that infects 7-8% of country per annum and kills 1.8% of the people who get it (with lethality growing exponentially with age), to something more infectious but less deadly.

But that will likely force the MSM et al to change their narrative (back) to risk elimination...masks, distancing, bubble wrap, etc regardless if you got your shots.

We need to accept that this thing is here forever, and get on with life. Nobody leads a perfectly healthy life, and Linda McCartney died early of cancer despite clean living. There's no need to be reckless, but there also isn't a need to live in a bubble.

Amen. Sadly, you have Karen’s and City councils, Mayors, governors, and various Gov agencies, etc. who will continue to push for “risk elimination” to keep Karen feeling safe (and reelecting them).

They will keep saying “well, if everyone just stayed inside for 2 more weeks, etc. Covid would disappear” etc. despite no science to back it up. People still need food, home repair, medical care, etc. ad would have to go out for that, meaning it would never not spread.

Provincetown is a notorious homosexual mecca. Gays aren't known for practicing safe anything so the notion that men who are there to engage in homosexual orgies are going to mask up and practice social distancing is a bit of a stretch.

The fourth of July is the peak of the summer season in Provincetown which means tens of thousands of gay men descended upon the place and all of them probably engaged in sex with multiple partners. It's an environment ripe for the transmission of viruses, Covid as well as things much more deadly.

I’m willing to bet we will stat seeing them talking about new cases, etc. soon and using that to justify lock downs.

I have a much more simple explanation, the PCR test has 95% false positives according to its inventor. Its use was to simulate a pandemic and now must be replaced as its false positive rate is making a mockery of the vaccine.
