Remains of the last person still listed as missing in the collapse of a Florida condominium tower on June 24 have been recovered and identified, bringing the final confirmed death toll to 98, Miami-Dade County officials said on Monday.

Remains of the latest victim, Estelle Hedaya, 54, were found by search teams on July 20, and medical examiners had been working since then to positively identify her before making Monday's announcement, authorities said at a news conference.

The Miami-Dade fire department's round-the-clock search for additional victims at the beachfront site of the Champlain Towers South condo, in the Miami suburb of Surfside, was demobilized last Friday.

Yes, there were over 160 total a month ago. Were there 62 people who lacked the decency to call police to tell them that they were OK?

There must have been a list of the owners/renters of the condos.

Depends on how shaken you were. Such a calamity happening to your home would put some people into a mental shock where clear thinking wasn't first and foremost.

I'm sure the police probably dropped a few balls on compiling these records, too. It was an unprecedented calamity.

I expect a similar tragedy to happen again soon to provide a month long news media narrative. Democrats will refocus on infrastructure and building safety.

About the only saving grace is that the medical examiner announced that all the victims died in the collapse and nobody appears to have lingered any period of time before dying.

Maybe some people didn’t know they are supposed to “check in” with police, or such was the last thing on their minds?

I recall hearing many owners of condos there were foreign visitors, who visited just at certain times of year. Maybe such people were listed as missing, but were in their home countries, and again, didn’t know that they were supposed to check in with police.

“Yes, there were over 160 total a month ago. Were there 62 people who lacked the decency to call police to tell them that they were OK?”

I find it hard to believe that the number of missing, days after the collapse, was 153 or so. Dead is 98, so by my calculation there were over 50 people who were supposed to be there, but were not. Who were those 50 people? When did they notify authorities they were ok. Did they really live there? Did they receive government checks? Did they vote? Were those ‘secondary addresses’ for people who rented them out, but used the mailbox as a primary address? I have many questions, but nobody in the media seems to be asking.

Pity. The recovery was no doubt a grim one, as the building pancaked.
