Average pay for restaurant and grocery workers rose above $15 an hour for the first time, according to Labor Department data reviewed by The Washington Post.

The Labor Department reported that in June, the most recent month where data is available, non-managerial restaurant workers earned an average of $15.31 an hour, which is a more than 10 percent increase from the $13.86 hourly wage workers were taking home before the pandemic, the Post noted.

Grocery store workers took home on average $15.04 an hour in June, which was up seven percent from when the pandemic began.

“15 bucks an hour = Inflation”

If inflation eats away at the earning power of $15, better raise the minimum wage above $15.

I’m not sure but I assume it’s for as many hours as people want to show up. All the 15/hr places around here (Indiana) are begging for people.

I have a friend who works at Kroger and she could literally work 80hrs a week if she wanted to. They can’t find acceptable peeps to hire.

Eating out has now gotten outrageously expensive.

Our local Asian restaurant has just raised prices 33% over pre-pandemic levels.

Other types have as well.................

Larger companies are paying $15/hr here in rural MO. Royal Oak charcoal plant for instance. Most everyone else are minimum wage to start which just went to $10.32/hr

‘$15 per hour for how many hours per week?’

it varies, no doubt, but 15 per hour at 8 hours a day for 240 days a year (more with weekends) comes out to almost 30k annually...

nice pay for non skilled employment...

Hardly. I went to local McD's and the sign says help wanted $15.00. So I guees everyone working their makes at least that. The menu prices look the same as then did a year ago, maybe slightly higher.

It’s not expensive because the dishwasher in the back is making $15.00/hr and not $12.50/hr.

As the cost of the meal goes up, server tips will go down. Servers get screwed.

yep vicious cycle that never helps anyone other than the usual suspects.
these are jobs held by people under 25 with no kids or mortgage, etc. There is no reason they should be making a tone of money..these are starter jobs unless you’re the manager, or the chef in the case of a “restaurant worker”

From now on I will expect a tip from the server at my table.
For being such a nice customer. A gratuity. They have the money.

non skilled entry level mostly for “kids” or older people looking for extra cash.

Things start costing a ton of money thanks to inflation, so the rise in wages is just a vicious cycle. this is your hard socialist rulers at work.

And just like when we all go to Lowes or Home Depot, we’ll soon start wondering where all the employees are. I’m all about folks getting paid for their work. Not going to argue that.

But, at the end of the day the shareholders DEMAND their tributes. In order to get them, they cut costs. If labor costs go up, due to increased pay, then they cut labor.

In their world....if we’re going to have to pay Joe a certain amount to work but Joe has to do the work of 3 people, Joe will do that work. If not, Joe will be fired and Jim will do the work. So on and so forth.

I’d work part time to have something to do. I’m 66. Problem is it’s not worth it to put up with the B.S. that one has to put up with in their working lives. Downsizing ones activities as we get older we can still help out but I’m done.
