The state of Oregon will no longer require its students to demonstrate proficiency in math, reading and writing in order to earn a high school diploma in a bid to bolster minority students.
Gov. Kate Brown signed a bill late last month suspending the state's 'essential skills' requirement for graduation for the next three years while its Department of Education seeks alternative graduation requirements.
The bill extended a suspension of the requirements that was put in place during the coronavirus pandemic.
Proponents of the measure have said the state's proficiency specifications hurt disadvantaged students, while opponents say suspending them lowers the state's learning standards.
Charles Boyle, a spokesman for Brown, said the suspension will benefit 'Oregon’s black, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color'.
'Leaders from those communities have advocated time and again for equitable graduation standards, along with expanded learning opportunities and supports,' Boyle said.
The bill, SB744, passed both chambers of Oregon's Democrat-led Legislature in June, largely along party lines, with pushback from Republicans.

Americans mask:
will there be special Oregon Summa cum Laude graduation
degrees and “honors”, for those who start fires
(perhaps, even one each for buildings and for forests),
and for those who reprehensively attack and maim
law enforcement — as Americans have watched for months?
There is no reason that a graduate be able to read and or understand what is or is not written on their diploma.

Why not just scrap education at this point, Oregon? What are you filling their day with? Crayons and cell phones? Is that what they get a “diploma” for?
When a significant percentage of the population is not capable of developing even the basic skills necessary to read, write and do basic arithmetic, then standards are brought down to accomadate the new “average”. Rugged individualism and personal achievment is now necessary more than ever. Put another way, the country has dumbed down considerably.
Also those that do not or cannot achieve rudimentary skills don’t seem to be personally bothered by their limitations. They seem to be well fed, clothed, housed and continue to procreate unchecked.
This will force parents that care to an alternative.

How can ANYBODY argue against the idea of school choice, if the public schools have NO minimal educational standards?
This actually may be the way that dept of ed/ public schools actually get taken out.
No employer can take an Oregon diploma now.
All they teach in school anymore is condoms’ on cucumbers and oral/anal sex.
And that is just the boys, who knows what they teach girls?
