A raging California wildfire pushing toward Pollock Pines in the Sierra Nevada foothills triggered new evacuations Tuesday afternoon, threatened the closure of Highway 50 and led to nightmare traffic.

Cap Radio journalist Scott Rodd shared a video Tuesday of traffic backed up along Sly Park Road, heading toward Highway 50, a major artery between South Lake Tahoe and Sacramento.

The California Highway Patrol warned after 3 p.m. that Highway 50 from Meyers to Ice House Road may be closed in the next couple hours because of the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County.

"Please plan accordingly," the CHP wrote on Twitter. "Leave South Lake Tahoe as soon as possible. Use alternate routes such as SR-89 to I-80 or US-50 to I-395."

The Caldor Fire broke out Saturday about 40 miles southwest of Lake Tahoe, as the crow flies. The blaze exploded from 2,261 acres Monday night to 6,500 acres Tuesday morning, burning through heavy timber in a steep river canyon, Cal Fire said. It is zero percent contained.

It’s midnight here in the Bay Area and the sky is this weird pinkish color with a waxing gibbous half moon the color of a slice of canteloupe.

Here in NV, about 60 SW from Tahoe, the winds are gusty and strong, the air quality was terrible today and a fine ash covered everything. The air quality is better now because of the wind but not good.

Years ago there was a Caldor at Routes 4 and 72 in Newark, DE.

Seriously, prayers up for those having to contend with these wildfires.
