Henri formed in the mid-Atlantic. After initially following a loopy southward and westward track, Henri is forecast to move northward toward New England.

I actually remember that storm……It was just before my 6th birthday……2 windows blew in .

I lived in southern Maine when Gloria hit.
One gust of wind took out three trees that took out all utility lines.
Another gust of wind knocked down a separate huge tree that crashed into the driveway blocking it.
It took the power company two weeks before they were able to restore power to the house. They had to use an industrial size chain saw attached to a separate vehicle to remove the trees.
Where I live now there are no trees than can take out the power lines to my house—I have removed them....you only need to learn that lesson once...

I believe you are referring to a portion of Long Is. NY. when you say Great South Bay.
I would bet they were caught off guard with little or no mention of the impending 1938 hurricane just like we were in Boston.- Tom

Yes, the Great South Bay separates LI from Fire Island.

Not as bad as the one in the late 30s. That one was a cat 3. My father in law in Pawtucket said it was really something.

Nope - we stayed in the barracks right thru the storm - fortunately the eye passed about 50 miles out. With some help from Pat Robertson:
LA Times: Robertson asserts that Hurricane Gloria veered away from the Virginia coast after he and his staff prayed that it would.
A combination of decreasing shear, improved organization, and
upper-level divergence associated with the trough to the west
should allow Henri to strengthen for the next 24 h or so, and the
new intensity forecast calls for a peak intensity of 75 kt. After
24 h, the center should move over cooler water, and weakening
should start before landfall in the northeastern United States.
However, the cyclone is still expected to be at or near hurricane
intensity at landfall. After landfall, Henri should weaken quickly
and become post-tropical by the 72 h time.

Same here. My grandparents - and parents - always spoke about the awful "Hurricane of '38" here in New England. I wish they were still around now to tell me more about it...
We last visited Coney Island about 20 years ago (it was before 9/11/01, I think). At that time, yes, The Cyclone was still there.
Oh wow... I hope and pray that Henri doesn’t take that same track as the 1938 hurricane (as seen in your graphic). That would be a direct hit over where we live now. :-(
That's really sweet... NICE place! Montauk Point probably was a lot nicer back then before all the libs took over the area. My parents honeymooned in NYC. (I think my grandparents honeymooned in Niagara Falls, lol)
