The vaccine introduction just selected a variant that it was less effective against. Which is why every competent infectious disease expert has been saying for a year that you can’t vaccinate your way out of a pandemic.
We were unlucky in that the selected variant is far more contagious. We were lucky that it is not any more dangerous.
