President Joe Biden wanted the now-departed Afghan president to create the 'perception' that his government was capable of holding off the Taliban - an indication he knew it was only a matter of time before the US ally fell to the Islamic group even while reassuring Americans at home that it would not happen.
In the last phone call between Biden and his Afghan then-counterpart Ashraf Ghani, the American president said they needed to change perceptions of the Taliban's rapid advance 'whether it is true or not,' according to excerpts published on Tuesday.
Four weeks before Kabul collapsed, Ghani pleaded for more air support and money for soldiers who had not had a pay rise in a decade.
A transcript obtained by Reuters reveals two leaders oblivious to the impending disaster and an American president focused on spinning the message.
'I need not tell you the perception around the world and in parts of Afghanistan, I believe, is that things are not going well in terms of the fight against the Taliban,' Biden said.
'And there is a need, whether it is true or not, there is a need to project a different picture.'

And you can best believe that word of that assessment found its way back to the Afghan military. Not good for morale.

Mr Ghani’s remarks comes as a video of him apparently pledging support to a Taliban presenting itself as a moderate version of the brutal group that ruled 1996-2001 was tweeted this week.
NDTV has not been able to independently verify this video...
He also spoke about the US’ decision to freeze nearly $9.5 billion in assets of the Afghan central bank; he criticised the move and said it denied Afghans access to money to rebuild their country...
He also hit out at Vice President Amrullah Saleh, who has joined hands with Ahmad Massoud, the son of an anti-Taliban fighter, to lead a military resistance that claims to have re-captured three districts.
Mr Ghani called Mr Saleh an “idiot” and said he had led his brother - against whom he claimed an assassination plot - astray. He also denied reports he stole money before fleeing.
“I was expelled from Afghanistan... I didn’t even get the chance to take my slippers off my feet and pull on my boots... arrived empty-handed,” Ashraf Ghani was quoted by news agency AFP.
