Mary Taboniar went 15 months without a paycheck, thanks to the COVID pandemic. A housekeeper at the Hilton Hawaiian Village resort in Honolulu, the single mother of two saw her income completely vanish as the virus devastated the hospitality industry.
For more than a year, Taboniar depended entirely on boosted unemployment benefits and a network of local foodbanks to feed her family. Even this summer as the vaccine rollout took hold and tourists began to travel again, her work was slow to return, peaking at 11 days in August — about half her pre-pandemic workload.
Taboniar is one of millions of Americans for whom Labor Day 2021 represents a perilous crossroads. Two primary anchors of the government’s COVID protection package are ending or have recently ended. Starting Monday, an estimated 8.9 million people will lose all unemployment benefits. A federal eviction moratorium already has expired.
While other aspects of pandemic assistance including rental aid and the expanded Child Tax Credit are still widely available, untold millions of Americans will face Labor Day with a suddenly shrunken social safety net.
“This will be a double whammy of hardship,” said Jamie Contreras, secretary-treasurer of the SEIU, a union that represents custodians in office buildings and food service workers in airports. “We’re not anywhere near done. People still need help. ... For millions of people nothing has changed from a year and a half ago.”

So basically she was getting more in unemployment than she made working plus all the other $$$ they have been throwing at her and she still needs help?
Time to get back to work.
Sucks to live in a communist state. In this case, not so easy to vote with your feet either. I guess knowing your State gov ahead of time would help you get out sooner when you can afford it would have been the thing to do.
Time to get a job, you bums!!!
Some semblance of normalcy, I say
These types of articles always boggle my mind. They go out and find a sob story or two to tug on heartstrings.
I have zero sympathy. ZERO. Are there no other minimum wage jobs in Hawaii?
There are thousands of Help Wanted signs around here. The local Arbys is paying a $300 sign-on bonus! A sign-on bonus for fast food work! Every small business person I talk to cannot keep up with their demand or workload. The local Walmart has way fewer checkers than they need forcing you to the self-checkout lines. I asked a woman helping at self-checkout and she said new hires last a few days or a couple of weeks and quit.
I read earlier today or yesterday that all the bennies available today can add up to the equivalent of a $100,000 job. It’s no wonder nobody is working.
The job numbers were abysmal.
The “COVID safety net” is a hammock.
No kidding - all my local fastfood and pizza chains have all had erratic hours or whole days shut down because they can’t find employees. My local Starbucks was on half days this week (I don’t partake - they’re at the road entrance to my grocery store so I can’t miss it)
Local Dominos Pizza had to close early tonight because they only had 1 person making the pizza.
Only one that seems to be unaffected is the local McDonalds which has a large hispanic staff... hmmm...
I’m more concerned about the untold millions of business owners who were run out of business by an orchestrated plandemic. Not to mention the foreclosures on rental properties.
“Women and children hardest hit”
Never a story about the small business owner who is working to save their business without any government help and struggling to obey government emergency Edicts which attempt to close the business down.
Good one. As for Hawaii, my daughter and son-in-law are flying over soon for their anniversary. Two weeks of work for housekeepers. Only problem is, they had to get vaccinated. He works for the sheriff’s department so was, as required. She works at home, and had bad reaction to first shot. Second? I think OK.
Business will pick up soon in Hawaii, with vaccinated people flying over again. Not to worry, little housekeeper. My kids tip very well too.
Hey, Mary, who’d you vote for?

When the MSM source is “AP”, you know it’s lefty bullsh*t. Our employees told me/us the reason why they didnt file for UI is because they’re loyal to us nd enjoy working here. They know and told us honestly, the alternative is working for lefty fag production companies and in my industry, they are the majority.
Yes, indeed. I know a guy who has been unemployed since April 2019 who says he has been receiving $560/wk in California unemployment and another $600/wk in Fed benefits. I believe it’s only $300 from the Feds now but that’s still $860/wk to sit on his sofa, watch porn, play video games, drink beer and have DoorDash deliver junk food all while living rent free. It’s long past time for these douchebags to pay their bills. F’ em.
The Eviction Ban is a Federal TAKING, is UNCONSTITUTIONAL, and the Feds OWE MONEY TO PROPERTY OWNERS for the first Eviction Ban!
Gee, was she also supporting her fatally ill mother and Mom’s 18 other kids? What about the 12 itinerant fathers, most of whom, are handicapped, biracial, bisexual and ostracized by society, haven’t eaten in weeks, homeless, etc.?? C’mon AP, you’re losing it. Make those tears come!
