Mary Taboniar went 15 months without a paycheck, thanks to the COVID pandemic. A housekeeper at the Hilton Hawaiian Village resort in Honolulu, the single mother of two saw her income completely vanish as the virus devastated the hospitality industry.
For more than a year, Taboniar depended entirely on boosted unemployment benefits and a network of local foodbanks to feed her family. Even this summer as the vaccine rollout took hold and tourists began to travel again, her work was slow to return, peaking at 11 days in August — about half her pre-pandemic workload.
Taboniar is one of millions of Americans for whom Labor Day 2021 represents a perilous crossroads. Two primary anchors of the government’s COVID protection package are ending or have recently ended. Starting Monday, an estimated 8.9 million people will lose all unemployment benefits. A federal eviction moratorium already has expired.
While other aspects of pandemic assistance including rental aid and the expanded Child Tax Credit are still widely available, untold millions of Americans will face Labor Day with a suddenly shrunken social safety net.
“This will be a double whammy of hardship,” said Jamie Contreras, secretary-treasurer of the SEIU, a union that represents custodians in office buildings and food service workers in airports. “We’re not anywhere near done. People still need help. ... For millions of people nothing has changed from a year and a half ago.”

The store that I worked in was closed permanently due to the hard drop in sales because of the covid crap.
The owner even got one of the first PPP loans, and it didn’t help overcome the drop in sales.
It was just a little part time “retirement” job for me, but I really loved having that to go to every day. I miss it very much.
Hawaii’s insane governor is the source of her troubles.
You mean Congress and govt employees are going to have to find jobs for a change?
I really believe it was the goal from the start to use covid to destroy Capitalism. Which has been taught in various forms since the radical sixties. See (cloward and Piven strategy) as well as the communist manifesto 45 planks of communism.
Oh, and I forgot to mention - I wasn’t on unemployment more than a couple of weeks. I took the first job offered to me. The misled all of us as to the pay. They knew we were all on unemployment - and if we refused a job offer we would be cut off. So they did a bait and switch. I quit that job and took another. That one pulled a similar trick. Seems the employers have become predatory.
In all of my decades of working, I have never experienced anything like this.
Sounds like Congress and the govt. minor.
If your on anytype of government assistance you should be at the front of the line for the vaccine. They want to thin the herd, well that’s a good place to start.
VAX the LAX!
Yes, I think that is so. I can’t even describe how reactive people were that did come into the shop.
How they were so suspicious - like I was planning/conspiring to give then covid, even though they came into the store of their own free will.
It felt like that. In spite of every one having a stupid mask on - if they leaned towards you while chatting, they suddenly got a look of suspicion in their eyes and would lurch backwards.
It was awful.
Business has been booming in the Islands...Honolulu Oahu lagging a bit...Maui off the charts and Kauai very busy...spending Christmas with a couple of families in Kauai...should be fun although there are no rental cars...Government over there is in the way right now and re-imposing some covid mandates which will hurt workers
she might want to consider a career change seeing how Hawaii came out the other day and said they wanted less tourism
hotel maids generally work from 6am to 1pm. leaving plenty of time for jobhunting. It’s a physical job, as physical as a nurses aide job, very similar skills, but nursing homes almost always have set full-time shifts, and probably more job opportunities with better pay than hotels. With 44 nursing homes in Hawaii, most with 5 star ratings, it would be the better bet for steady full time low-skill employment over a seasonal hotel.
We went to check the local high-end groceries stores to buy a gluten-free cake for an upcoming birthday party.
The people answering the phones at the store almost laughed at us: they haven’t been producing custom cakes or gluten-free cakes for months, because they can’t find anyone willing to work!
That's obscene.
Of course there are additional benefits, hard to isolate just one: destroyed small businesses & property ownership, increased state control, continued excuse for mail-in ballot fraud, extended Sino bio-warfare on Americans (Pfizer's Board includes dozens of CCP members), and last, a reserve army of the unemployed for staffing FBI/Antifa's ranks to burn cities and towns later - when the 'bad' GOP tries to remove their safety net racket.
Obscene. Indeed it is. And rent FREE on top of that. Think about it for a moment. $3400/mo. plus no rent or mortgage payments (Average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in So. Cal. is $1200 - $1500 per month). Several million residents have been living like kings for almost 2 years on taxpayer funds. It’s mind boggling.
But I guarrantee you not even 1% of them have put a penny into savings. Retailers like Walmart, Starbucks, Best Buy, car dealerships and cell phone companies have been making money hand over fist with all of the free government money flowing out here. Long past time for these leeches to pay the piper.
Excellent!
Who wants to bet that when these programs end and people are FORCED to go back to work, the Bxjinng Administration will brag about how many people they put back to work? And claim all these new jobs were added.
Waaaa, cry me a river. SMH.
They're going to find out those gaps on their resumes aren't exactly going to endear them to potential employers.
They have a timeshare on Maui. Were there three years ago, pictures show terrific location right on the water. Mama’s jealous. I haven’t been there in decades.
When you get to back go to Mama’s Fish House!!!
