Why most Americans no longer honor unions on Labor Day
New York Post ^ | September 6, 2021 | Editorial Board

Today, Labor Day is largely an occasion for sales, end-of-summer cookouts and back-to-school preparations. Why? Because the movement has become as irrelevant to most Americans as the medieval guilds that preceded it — and all too often a protector of privileges rather than a force for the oppressed.

In 1954, more than one in three American workers was a union member. Today, it’s barely over 6 percent of private-sector workers — but, in a huge shift, more than a third of public-sector workers (nearly 35 percent). Indeed, more than half of all union members today work for government: 7.2 million, vs. 7.1 million in the private sector, a figure that includes a lot of “quasi-public” jobs in sectors like health care.

Yet even as pro-union a president as Franklin Delano Roosevelt — who did more than any other chief executive to extend organized labor’s reach — was sure that unions had no place in government service. As he wrote in 1937: “All government workers should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service.”

And strikes by public employees, he wrote, are “unthinkable and intolerable.”

The way FDR’s warning has gone by the wayside is probably a major reason public support for unions is way down — and why huge Labor Day parades are a distant memory.

I will never forgive the American labor Union support Stalin during ww2 and their sabotage of the US war effort. Screw them.

The world we live in now, is very different than the working world of 100 plus years ago. Unions were active in pushing for working conditions which we take for granted now, such as the 8 hour day, the 5 day week, time and a half overtime, paid vacations, retirement plans, and other benefits.

For most workers, the time for labor unions has come and gone.

Because unions suck. Period.

I am not saying union members suck, most are just trying to make a living.

But the ones who run them, the ones who are all in on them...yep. They suck.

Unions aren’t run for the benefit of the members, they’re run for the benefit of union leaders. So, for that matter, is the government in general.

Some years ago a conservative writer (who?) said someone asked why the Labor Day marches and rallies don’t have the hundreds of thousands as in the 1960s and 70s.

Other guy said: “Many of the workers are at their summer houses using their vacation time.”

So downtrodden under the capitalist rulers./S

They only did in the 30s and 40s what many of their Commie influenced leaders (as opposed to rank and file) set out to do in the 20s and earlier.

So, yes, screw the unions.

"...and their sabotage of the US war effort..."

Disgusting. Astonishingly disgusting. I saw this recently on a web page talking about it:

"...Even in 1944, the last full year of the war, the numbers didn’t improve. There were no fewer than 4950 work stoppages costing 8.7 million labor days—enough to build two thousand B-17's. The week before D-Day, twenty-eight factories were on strike in Detroit alone...

How do you do that? How? How, when your son is fighting, your father is fighting, your husband is fighting, how do you do that? How?

This is completely lost on people today who know nothing of history. They don't know anything about this.

I did not know that
about U.S. Labor Unions supporting Stalin. Are you sure about that? Im not questioning your integrity, I just find it a rather shocking and deeply disturbing part of our history.

Of course, in the present, we have Democrats eagerly working with Satanists against the new abortion laws of Texas.

The only unions now are government ones, and they are corrupt, statist organizations, that are of our oppression.

I regularly threatened to fly a Soviet Union flag on Labor Day, but I was reminded that too many would regard it as a genuine rather than a sarcastic statement.

Wouldn’t surprise me in the least. Labor unions are a product of communist philosophy. It was Karl Marx himself who said “Workers of the world unite”.

I’ve been proudly boycotting union made products where possible for years as a result.

Yep. There were a huge number of socialists and communists involved. All of them ostensible friends of Roosevelt and the Democrats.

Putrid scum.

The Janus SCOTUS decision emasculated the public sector unions.

Long overdue!

Unions do nothing but reward the lazy and the shiftless. Hard work. Efficiency is anathema. Any initiative that makes the majority look bad is not just discouraged but, threatened. I vividly remember when several years ago when the hurricane hammerd NJ/NY many hundreds of Line Workers from the southern states raced up to help out. When word got out about this the Union Electrical Workers mobilized against them.
Those Union POS rejected their help and formed lines against them telling the non-union workers to get the F out of here. Those Union POS could not have cared less that the additional help would have made the recovery eminently more quickly and their customers better off far more quickly. Saving the lives of the very sick and elderly. All they cared about was those Linemen were non-Union and perceived them as a threat.
Totally disgusting excuses for human beings are most Union Workers. I personally despise them all.
