Virginia cuts Confederate Gen. Robert Lee statue into pieces

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A crowd erupted in cheers and song Wednesday as work crews hoisted an enormous statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee off the pedestal where it has towered over Virginia’s capital city for more than a century.

One of America’s largest monuments to the Confederacy, the equestrian statue was lowered to the ground just before 9 a.m., after a construction worker who strapped harnesses around Lee and his horse lifted his arms in the air and counted, “Three, two, one!” to jubilant shouts from a crowd of hundreds. A work crew then began cutting it into pieces.

“Any remnant like this that glorifies the Lost Cause of the Civil War, it needs to come down, said Gov. Ralph Northam, who called it “hopefully a new day, a new era in Virginia.” The Democrat said it represents “more than 400 years of history that we should not be proud of.”

Sharon Jennings, an African American woman born and raised in Richmond, said she had mixed feelings seeing it go.

“It’s a good day, and it’s a sad day at the same time,” Jennings, 58, said. “It doesn’t matter what color you are, if you really like history, and you understand what this street has been your whole life and you’ve grown up this way, you’re thinking, ‘Oh, my God.’ But when you get older you understand that it does need to come down.”

Some chanted “Whose streets? Our streets!” and sang, “Hey hey hey, goodbye.” One man with a Black Lives Matter flag was escorted out by police after running into the fenced-off work area. No arrests were reported, and there was no sign of a counter protest.

How come this statue wasn’t taken down during the race riots in the 1960s?

It also shows how ignorant of history those people are. Robert E. Lee was one of the loudest voices against slavery in the Confederacy as he thought it would lead to it’s destruction. He was right. In fact one would be surprised at how many Confederate leaders were actually anti-slavery, their only real problem with getting rid of it was the fact they did not want a bunch of Yankees telling them to do so. And that’s really why they started the civil war. It was a true case of emotional policy making leading to their destruction.

Because the statue of Lee in Richmond had nothing to do with race. This is only about destroying American culture and history. Currently, using race baiting hustlers and their useful idiot adherents is the most expedient way to erase the history of American exceptionalism.

Agree....Disgraceful...

Our history should be respected and honored...all of it. Unfortunately, we have reached a point in our “history” where each new day is worse than the day before.

I believe we are on the precipice of another war. If not a war then we are headed towards radical socialism where people no longer useful are euthanized or put into concentration camps.

Well of course not all German Generals in WWII were Nazis, Rommel immediately comes to mind.

This the definition of mob rule. They’ve been emboldened by the politician’s response. Next statue will be George Washington removed from Wall Street. The goal is to erase history so we wont learn from our mistakes.

And now why is the city of Richmond, Virginia a special place to visit now? I vote we replace it with a George Floyd statue. </sarcasm>

Maybe someday on the future they will tear down Clinton, Obama and Biden statues? Naaaaah, the trip down never reverses itself. People of South Dakota beware. Mt Rushmore’s time is approaching.
