Twelve years ago in autumn, the Year of the Ox according to the traditional Chinese horoscope and a year after the massive 2008 financial crisis, then-US president Barack Obama went to Beijing to propose a megadeal to China.
It was a pact about the environment that could include technology transfer from the US to China. The pact didn’t gain traction in China and was finally scuttled at the climate conference in Copenhagen that December.
Last week, again in the Year of the Ox, US Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry went to Tianjin to broach the environmental issue with the Chinese. Kerry, secretary of state for Obama from 2013 to 2017, didn’t fare much better this time.
Kerry was reportedly arguing that the two countries should cooperate on climate, which is common for the whole world despite differences. No substantive replies apparently came from Beijing. Quite the opposite, strident sounds were voiced in the official dispatches.
Besides, there was the strange framework of the meeting: Kerry flew to Tianjin for a video conference with his Chinese counterparts, who remained secluded in Beijing due to fears of contracting Covid-19. Couldn’t Kerry then have avoided the trip?
The Year of the Ox does not augur well for US-China diplomacy.
As tensions rise between the two superpowers, there is growing concern about the lack of dialogue between the two leaders, who have not met and possibly will not meet any time soon.

Kerry couldn’t win an argument with himself.
I suspect that China is waiting for the ragged Biden administration to self destruct. No sense trying to cut a deal with a dead horse.

aside from the enjoyable fact that kerry was shown just exactly what he and the biden’s mewlings are worth and made the buffoon on the world stage, what a waste
Basically Kerry went there pretending doing good things for the world and the US while it really was a cover for him to give China a deal opportunity pollute and cut America. Yet Beijing was still annoyed by his farcical make up.
Kerry was the stupidest Secretary of State ever to have that position.
He was the third most stupid Senator in history,

Interesting that they wouldn’t sign whatever Kerry was proposing, being that everyone knows they have no intention of following through on their part of it.
I think a more Accurate Headline would be, “Chinese Use Kerry”. Or, more likely, “Kerry in cahoots with the Communist Chinese”.
