An executive of Kroger, one of the largest supermarket chains in the United States, warned grocery prices are about to become even higher this year as inflation sets in.

Inflation is running hotter than previously anticipated, and prices are slated to rise an additional 2 to 3 percent over the second half of 2021, Kroger CFO Gary Millerchip said during a call with reporters.

This is a counter-strike comment to show anger at the Biden cabal. Kroger stores have already been short staffed to the tune of 50% for the past year. Fresh produce rots in the back, dairy sits in the walk in coolers for a week, no personnel to restock shelves, etc.....

Faced with higher cost of an item that it sells, the retailer can either pass the price increase on to the consumer OR keep the price the same and sell the item a reduced profit (OR no profit at all OR even at a loss). Why would a retailer accept less profit or even a loss? Well, the idea is to maintain foot traffic at the store, so maybe some staples like bread and milk are sold at a less profit (or even at a loss) while the store raises prices on items that maybe the shopper picks up less frequently (liquor, aluminum foil, A-1 steak sauce, whatever) and for which he won’t balk as much or even notice that he’s now paying 20% more than he used to.

Fish is already priced far too high. One of the reasons is grocery stores have high losses due to the way they handle and display fish. No amount of information on proper handling penetrates.

One small case on point - the local store has a large open double-sided case where you can grab some sandwich meats and cheeses which was always chock full. Now, on good days, there may be 1/2 dozen packets on one side and 3-4 on the other. There is often no one behind the deli counter to take an order.

Another option is that the store can cut operating costs by going self-checkout. A lot of stores are already expanding their self-checkout kiosks with some even experimenting with having customers scan their own groceries as they shop and paying for them as they walk out the door. That will eliminate the need for most cashiers and baggers at the front end - a significant cost savings for the supermarket, despite the fact that these are mostly minimum wage jobs.

Next cost savings target will be with the grocery carts. Aldi's already does this. You will need to pay to "rent" a shopping cart. After you are done shopping, you get your money back if you return the cart to the corral. If not, there will surely be somebody out there looking for some easy pocket change that will be happy to return it for you (and collect the money). The upshot is that the supermarket no longer needs to pay some kid to shag grocery carts.

It's all quickly moving that way, especially as there continues to be political pressure to keep raising that minimum wage. There will just be much fewer of those types of jobs.
