I see you actually follow the “missing attractive blonde” distraction. Don’t get it as I carry a Y chromosome.

What they didn’t mention was…..what percentage went to college let alone grad school in 1949? What percentage spend years beyond 16 going to school now?

That will put quite a dent in the labor participation rate.

Flipping real estate has been good for me. :)

I wonder how that ripples out to other guys who work on houses and yards for cash?

I met a retired electric utility guy who retired from the National Guard, who was on partial disability, and was going for 100 per cent disability, who was running a tree service and going for 100 per cent disability, and played traveling league softball! Go figure!

Flipping real estate has been good for me. :)

My Dad was a disabled WWI vet. He stopped working for others when WWII ended.

He became a house and business flipper.

His workforce was often, out work/disabled vets by the job.

After he died, my mother did some higher end flipping into her late 70’s.

While working, she maxed out her 401k, Iras and Jimmy Carter CDs.

She used many of the old vets my Dad used to paint and spruce up homes. She traveled and did some real estate on those trips.

My company enabled me to flip 4 houses with them picking the moving/settlement costs.

I knew a guy who worked in the IG office at HillAFB. He would follow people around who were trying to get disability. He would prove with video beyond doubt that the applicants were faking. The Agency uplines would approve the claims anyhow. They were afraid of lawsuits....

Unfortunate the authors used the time frame of the late 40’s for a comparison as that is when both wars ended and there was a mass reentry of men and women returning to an economy that had been protected by deficit spending. And I believe the major difference there was that those people wanted to work, but couldn’t find it with a hamstrung economy. These people are choosing not to work for a number of negative reasons that can push the economy to deficit.

"One problem they have is no SS, as they were cash only, their whole lives, so they have to scramble when they get old and feeble and can no longer work."

Yeah, that's a real problem. I don't think most of those guys have retirement planning skills, so a lot of them may be destitute when they get old. Not that SS is a huge bonanza, but it's probably enough to keep you off the street unless you live in a place with high housing costs.

It’s a good idea to read the entire article - the title is kind of misleading. The author admits that a good number of those range between homeless/mentally ill, men who retired-early, stay-at-home dads, those living off the land, etc. (And I certainly wouldn't consider those last three to be 'non-working'.)

Noted toward the end: ‘Others are living non-working lives without burdening society or others, such as a fireman on early retirement (though some argue municipal employee pensions are too high), or an investor who made a ton of money in the market and called it quits, or maybe a wilderness guy living off the land in Alaska.'

But he also says, ‘It seems like working legally to provide for yourself in America is really just one option these days.’ So, I wonder whether our author thinks that those options under ‘non-working lives without burdening society’ are ‘legal’ or not...

Half-baked article containing lots of illogic.

Same here - retired before 50 after 25 years active duty. I was buying land while all my peers were buying new toys.

Eliminating unemployment insurance would light a fire under their asses. It’s a paid vacation. Then find a way to verify everyone else has worked 40 hours/wk to prove they are at least making an honest effort before they seek government assistance-pay check stubs? Tattoos? Don’t make me laugh.

My sister found out the hard way. After a lifetime of being a housewife and mom, she got a divorce because her husband found god in the form of a crazy, hot Jesus freak. She gets alimony, but can’t qualify for Medicare until her ex starts taking SS. She went bankrupt a couple of times for medical reasons, and now is caught between getting a real job or qualifying for Medicaid.

Curious and don’t provide personal info. What type work?
Assembly line, delivery, stocking shelves, group work or
single. I personally think there are jobs out there for those
that want to get out and work.

“I’m 56 years old and I’ve been fully retired for 4 years.”

I ran a small business for 25 years, and did about the same thing you are doing.

I will not start a new business when the Government simply has declared war on small business.

I have gone John Galt as much as I possibly can. I know quite a few people that have done the same thing.

This is precisely what an International Monetary Fund (IMF) study found. “Countries with relatively low tax rates, fewer laws and regulations, and a well-established rule of law tend to have smaller shadow economies,” the study concluded.8

"I think our love of money over peace and tranquility is a noble idea to a point."
Umm ... I'd go with "I think our love of peace and tranquility over money is a noble idea.

Not sure if you had a typo in there ...

Just my opinion. ;-)
