BILLINGS, Mont. — Death’s come knocking a last time for the splendid ivory-billed woodpecker and 22 more birds, fish and other species: The U.S. government on Wednesday declared them extinct.
It’s a rare move for wildlife officials to give up hope on a plant or animal, but government scientists say they’ve exhausted to find these 23. And they warn climate change, on top of other pressures, could make such disappearances more common as a warming planet adds to the dangers facing imperiled plants and wildlife.
The factors behind the disappearances vary — too much development, water pollution, logging, competition from invasive species, birds killed for feathers and animals captured by private collectors. In each case, humans were the ultimate cause.
Climate change is making species recovery harder, bringing drought, floods, wildfires and temperature swings that compound the threats species already faced.

“Saving endangered species is just one more arrogant attempt by humans to control nature. It’s arrogant meddling; it’s what got us in trouble in the first place. Doesn’t anybody understand that? Interfering with nature. Over 90% - over, WAY over – 90% of all the species that have ever lived on this planet, ever lived, are gone! Pwwt! They’re extinct! We didn’t kill them all, they just disappeared. That’s what nature does. They disappear these days at the rate of 25 a day and I mean regardless of our behaviour. Irrespective of how we act on this planet, 25 species that were here today will be gone tomorrow. Let them go gracefully. Leave nature alone. Haven’t we done enough?”
-George Carlin
I got a nest of those guys in my back yard. Beautiful woodpeckers.
Let them ascend to Heaven. God has plans for them in his Kingdom.
More seeds and grubs for us.
A 21 peck solute is in order.
Peck
Peck
Peck peck
Peck
Peck peck peck...
Tasted like chicken.
It is another way to instill fear and control the ignorant masses.
I’m gonna say that alligators are no longer endangered in the least bit, and I hope that it would be allowed to kill one if you see it encroaching at your home. When I was a kid, you could waterski on lakes in Florida without fear of being eaten by these animals. Not so anymore.
So great. Makes you wonder where he’d fall on the issues today. Kind of glad it will stay a mystery.
I would have enjoyed Carlin’s take on Covid and Karens.
Yours are probably the Pileated Woodpeckers, which are, indeed, beautiful.
GMTA!!
Sorry to hear that a species has gone extinct. Around here we have plenty of other woodpeckers which I am sure are every bit as annoying as this now missing type.
But blaming “climate change” completely trashes the credibility of the story. Unadulterated records show that “Drought, floods, wildfires and temperature swings” are no more prevalent than they have been in the past. The climate is always changing. A little more than 10,000 years ago the place where my wife and I live was under 1000s of feet of ice. This is merely an example of the propaganda technique of “repeat a lie often enough and people will eventually start to believe it”.
:)
There’s a distinct lack of independent thought by famous persons nowadays.
Cue the Monte Python parakeet skit!
Well everytime I try to take a photo of them it shows blurry so i am pretty sure it’s the ivory billed ones.
Works for me!
Obviously our government needs to spend an extra trillion dollars to bring these poor creatures back to life. After all, our government can do anything it puts it’s mind to. And if it fails, they’ll make it work by further raising our taxes and national debt
