Reactions roll in on Florida’s $10 minimum wage
The Capitolist ^ | September 30th 2021 | Jordan Kirkland

Posted on 10/03/2021 12:13:35 PM PDT by Jacquerie

Florida’s first incremental increase in the minimum wage went into effect on Thursday, increasing from $8.65 per hour minimum to $10 per hour.

The first in a series of wage hike increases come after Florida voters approved a constitutional amendment backed by Orlando TV attorney John Morgan. The measure was approved via a supermajority vote of 60.8 percent last election cycle, with more than 6.3 million Floridians say they favor a $15 hour minimum wage hike.

Today marked the first step in that process, with the state’s minimum wage set to increase by $1 each year on September 30th, until 2027, when there would be an annual adjustment to the state minimum wage based on increases to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers.

“We believe wages should be determined by the market, not politics, and that’s clearly what’s been happening as Florida’s economy has opened up. The latest NFIB jobs survey shows a staggering 50% of small businesses nationwide have openings they can’t fill, and while Florida’s minimum is jumping to $10 an hour, our survey shows that 41% of owners nationwide have already begun paying more while another 26% plan to raise wages in the next three months,” said NFIB State Executive Director Bill Herrle.

“Of course, that money has to come from someplace. Raising the starting wage will increase the financial pressure on small businesses that are struggling to get through the pandemic and could end up hurting workers as employers simply try to get by with fewer workers to offset the overall increase in labor costs. “It remains to be seen whether raising the minimum wage will affect Florida’s labor shortage. Our jobs survey showed that 91% of small businesses nationwide with positions to fill had few if any qualified applicants.”

I’m sure there were quite a few Republicans that supported this. Ones that do not have a fundamental understanding of economics, running a business, etc. The whole thing pushed by a guy who will never have to adhere to the new law, just make it harder for others.

Right now businesses are offering more than this and still can’t fill positions.

8.65 ? that is crazy how can anyone live on that ?

Florida is one of the few states I have never been to.

fast food restaurants near me are paying $20 with hiring bonuses.

of course this hurts the entry trades people where they have worked and gone to school while only making $22-25 and then rent increases too.

NJ’s minimum is $12/hour - and that gets you some listless, unmotivated workers. The problem for working students I know is that everyone gets $12 - so if you’re good, you’re paid the same as the slacker.

For too long NJ and neighboring NY have been importing non-working foreigners, while chasing Americans (and their children, and employers) out with a very high cost of living. It’s a real McJob economy here now.

You don’t live on minimum wage. Minimum wage gets you your 1st job to show you have the required self discipline and personality skills to hold a job.

Pissed off how much meat costs? That a direct result of meat packers raising their starting minimum wage to $16.80 an hour

Raise the wage forces an increate is price of goods which then renders you wage hike just another wage that “no one can live on that”.

In this economy who is going to pay more profit to the owners so that they can pay for this mandate? How can owners now afford to hire entry level employees?

Answer: Entry level employees will be laid off with no replacements hired. Wherever possible products will have to be built overseas by slaves. Entry level American workers will go onto the public dole, and taxpayers will pay for them to do nothing except steal from taxpayers.

Don’t forget robots and other automation.

The tech is getting better and better, and any increase in wage costs is a de facto subsidy of robot/automation manufacturing companies.

Robots/automation machines don’t require training, don’t get sick, don’t take vacation, don’t steal stuff, don’t “call out” after a hard night partying, don’t accuse the employer of discrimination or wrongful termination, don’t require payroll taxes, employer paid social security, employer paid health insurance, employer paid worker’s compensation, and don’t require the blizzard of HR paperwork....

There should be no minimum hourly rate of pay. The government does not have the right to set hourly rates of pay. End of discussion.

I can't believe with today's prices of they're paying people 10 bucks an hour. What's that after all taxes? $7.50?

Insane...They'd have to work 5 hours to fill their gas tank!

Wow..

One of the clickbait headlines a while back was people say they will only agree to leave home to go back to jobs if more money, more benefits, better working conditions....

Wasn’t there a tv show “Who’s the Boss?”

You don’t live on minimum wage.

So what the hell is a job good for if you can't even live or survive on it? Are they all supposed to live in their cars or with someone else who pays all the bills?

I just drove from Miami to Mass. All of the food joints were hiring. Most of the ones in FLA were starting at $12. And they were short staffed. When the line is 1/2 hour at the drive through…there are problems.

What people don’t realize is that $10 is just the symbolic base rate (which most low-wagepeople are already receiving) and most places have to pay more than that to get anybody.

We have youth who have all the time in the world to go
protest across the nation, but work? Seriously?

They have no money that they have earned, but they have
travel expenses, local transportation expenses, lodging
expenses, eating expenses...

Who pays for all this stuff? I’m sure the FBI is right on
that hot topic. Well, no! They are too busy doing a
survey of employers to find out if their employees
were in Washington, D. C. on January 6th. Why that
was a conspiracy that needs to be investigated.

You know, like Russian collusion.

One city, about three hours vs 20+ cities, and months on
end.

You can’t make up how deep the corruption goes. It just
seeps out into the public view no matter what they try
to do to hide it, or explain it away.

Evil is evil...

These people are all in on the reset. Nothing else
matters. The United Nations has spoken. It’s will be
done.

I wrote that thinking of what ‘entry level’ jobs are all
about. They are minimum wage jobs that teach kids a work
ethic. They are not paid big money, because they are not
being asked to solve major issues. They work there for
a few years and move on. Next kid...

Now adults have glomed onto these jobs, many of them
from outside the nation with very little education. So
now they need a living wage. They don’t have the
knowledge or skills to work a regular job like citizens
do. Who created this mess? Who is demanding the new
higher level minimum wages? Who is driving small
businesses out of business?

Not only are we demanded to contribute to a living wage
for them, but we pay for their housing, medical bills,
food, and on and on it goes.

The reset has been going on since Reagan’s days.

GHW Bush took over from him, and all hell broke loose.

Good luck folks.

Working at McDonald’s was always a transitory job, or a second job, or a job for college students, etc., when I was younger.

It’s only recently that it apparently became a career.

With rising prices, $15 an hour will keep the poor at relatively the same economic level as they were when they made $7.25 an hour. Nothing much will change for them, except maybe a tax bracket.
