NYC to phase out Gifted and Talented program

Mayor Bill de Blasio is phasing out New York City’s Gifted and Talented program, he announced Friday — bowing to critics who complain that the coveted model is racist.

Current students in the program will be able to stay in accelerated-learning classes to completion. But new cohorts they will be completely eliminated by fall 2022, ending the current testing for 4-year-old city kids.

“The era of judging four-year-olds based on a single test is over,” de Blasio said Friday.

It is being replaced by Brilliant NYC, a program offering students aged 8 and up chances for accelerated learning — while staying in their regular classrooms with other pupils.

De Blasio announced the major overhaul despite being in the final months of his term in office.

The candidates to replace him, Democrat Eric Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa, have both made clear they did not want to completely eliminate the program, which critics have attacked in part because of the higher number of white and Asian students that pass the tests.

“Brilliant NYC will deliver accelerated instruction for tens of thousands of children, as opposed to a select few,” de Blasio said.

“Every New York City child deserves to reach their full potential, and this new, equitable model gives them that chance.”

But critics quickly ripped Hizzoner for making the decision so late in his administration after earlier calls for him to leave it to his successor.

“Gifted and talented programs have been an integral option for generations of schoolkids,” tweeted Sen. John Liu (D-Queens), who chairs a panel on New York City schools.

“@BilldeBlasio promised intensive public engagement about it but now wants total elimination.

“This won’t help his abysmal record. If anything, his legacy will be revocation of mayoral control,” said Liu.

The reasons can be debated, but it's a fact that on IQ tests, American blacks score about 1 standard deviation (15 points) below whites. A common threshold for a gifted program is an IQ of 130, 2SD above average. If you demand that all racial groups be proportionally represented, you cannot have a gifted program. In general, America needs to make a choice between non-discrimination and government-enforced equal outcomes. Charles Murray's book "Facing Reality: Two Truths about Race in America" (2021) discusses this. He co-authored "The Bell Curve" (1994).

when i went to school we had tracks, but they were class specific so you could be in advanced class in some subjects and standard class for others

The gifted and talented need to move somewhere where they are treated with respect and honored for their talents.

NYC wants stupid drones, and that is exactly what they will get.

After all of the sane folks bail out of New York and California, will the millions of illegal immigrants gravitate toward those two states, to live in welfare nirvana ?

Let’s face it: all gifted and talented are getting out of Dodge as fast as possible. But the remainders will still vote Democrat.

“THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal. “

The lucky smart kids will exit for private school or home school. The unlucky smart kids will face a dumbed-down curriculum that neither challenges them nor expands their future opportunities.

Classic. Blacks and Latinos can’t keep up? Lower the bar. This is how civilizations die.

I was in the Gifted and Talented program when I was in elementary school. There were two other boys in it with me and we were put in a corner with our books, all alone, while the teachers spent the entire time with the remedial class. By the second year of being in the advanced classes and being neglected, I was behind in math and social studies. I still scored very high on my exams and tests but struggled with being ignored by my teachers for those years and left behind to learn on my own.

Since allowing kids to reach their potential academically is racist, isn’t allowing kids to reach their potential athletically equally racist? All school sports should be disbanded and stopped in NY.

Thomas Sowell discusses this extensively in a few of his books. One of the most prominent studies he discussed was a post-WWII longitudinal research study conducted on children born in Europe vs. those born in the US that came from either mixed race or black households. Many American soldiers stayed behind in Europe, started families with the women in those countries, and their children went through the education systems of those countries much the same way any black child would in America.

The results showed that black and mixed race children in Europe showed no difference in intelligence from their white counterparts while American black and mixed race children were markedly less intelligent than their white peers. This led Thomas Sowell to theorize that American culture and educational systems treat blacks differently than white counterparts (he does discuss segregation as a cross-section but doesn’t blame it outright), but what was interesting is that he points the finger at BLACK culture as the detractor vs. any sort of systemic racism.

Black culture in America has been the downfall of blacks, and race baiters continue to force the victimhood mentality down their throats to their detriment. There are few prominent blacks who are brave enough to stand up to their peers and say they need to clean up their own house, because it’s just too easy to play victim.

I believe welfare, with its breakup of black families is the main cause.

How about phasing out the gifted and talented from football and basketball?

I’m sure that would go over like a raging bull in a china shop.

On a side note, my daughter was knocked out of her school’s gifted and talented to make space for lower performing yutes.

Remember studying and getting good grades is considered “acting white” by other demographics

The Detroit Lions did that years ago.
