Metro Phoenix Deputy on Life Support; Suspect Shot

PHOENIX—A suspect who allegedly assaulted and gravely injured a metro Phoenix sheriff’s deputy has been shot and wounded by a homeowner with whom he had a history of conflicts, authorities said Sunday.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s officials said the suspect—identified as 30-year-old Clinton Robert Hurley— was hospitalized in critical condition while the deputy was on life support.

Hurley was shot Saturday night at a home in Tonopah, some 52 miles west of Phoenix.

The manhunt for Hurley began around 11 a.m. Saturday after he allegedly attacked a deputy who was processing the suspect on multiple felony warrants at a substation in suburban Avondale, about 18 miles west of Phoenix, according to authorities.

Sheriff’s officials said the deputy, a three-year veteran of the department whose name wasn’t immediately released, was found unconscious and bleeding from the face and rushed to a hospital.

Hurley took the deputy’s SUV, crashed through a fence and fled the area before allegedly stealing another vehicle and driving to Tonopah, according to authorities.

Sheriff Paul Penzone said at a news conference Saturday night that Hurley and the unidentified homeowner had a history of conflict, but he didn’t release any details.

Hurley was released from an Arizona prison in December after serving time for attempted child molestation, Penzone added.

It wasn’t immediately known if Hurley had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.

When are cops going to learn to work in pairs, facing each other?

Less coverage? So what?

He was an escapee. He overpowers and nearly kills a deputy inside a substation, steals a cop vehicle and goes and gets shot up by a neighbor/acquaintance. A one man substation? And they don’t even say if the deputy was shot or beaten. Did he get the deputy’s gun?

They do not work in pairs simply because it would take a division of deputies to work these counties.
Take a good look at the size of most of them.

“A one man substation?”

Most of the time. Some are open during business hours, but most in rural areas are only used when a desk or cell is needed.

Dealing with individuals with multiple outstanding felony warrants all by your lonesome, doesn’t seem like a real good idea.

It isn’t.

The problem is that MCSO has deputies and detention officers leaving in droves.

The DOJ, in concert with Penzone, has handcuffed Maricopa county law enforcement. IA never misses an opportunity to place someone under investigation, thereby hamppering their ability to transfer. Many of the investigations are over two years old.

It is called retention by investigation.

They all want to leave because of IA?

Internal affairs investigations on phony, anonymous charges.

I’m not buying that is the reason why the deputy was left dying on the floor of the substation.

So why are the leaving in droves and how did the deputy get beaten nearly to death inside a substation with apparently no backup at the station? I can’t believe the deputy was by himself at some substation while dealing with or processing a multiple felony suspect.

1) not enough deputies to man a substation 2/7

2) suspensions for bogus complaints; no backup from command staff of supervisory staff

Pretty stupid stuff. I’m trying to wrap my head around processing a multiple felony suspect all alone, when all the suspect has to do overpower one person and then escape, and adding insult to injury, stealing a law enforcement vehicle. They’re lucky a citizen took this guy out, otherwise this could have been way more horrific.
