Taiwan says don't get too close as China defends military drills

Taiwan's defence ministry warned China of strong countermeasures on Wednesday if its forces got too close to the island, as Beijing defended its incursions into Taiwan's air defence zone as "just" moves to protect peace and stability.

Military tensions with China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, are at their worst in more than 40 years, Taiwan's defence minister said last week, adding China will be capable of mounting a "full scale" invasion by 2025.

He was speaking after China mounted four straight days of mass air force incursions into Taiwan's air defence identification zone that began Oct. 1, part of a pattern of what Taipei views as stepped up military harassment by Beijing.

No shots have been fired and China's aircraft have stayed well away from Taiwan's airspace, concentrating their activities in the southwestern corner of Taiwan's air defence zone.

In a report to parliament, Taiwan's defence ministry said their forces will adhere to the principle of "the closer they are to the island, the stronger the countermeasures", though it gave no details.

The ministry expressed concern again of China's growing prowess, with new aircraft carriers, nuclear-powered submarines and amphibious assault ships coming into service.

China's capabilities in denying access and blockading the Taiwan Strait "are becoming more and more complete, which will pose serious challenges and threats to our defence operations", it added.

China blames Taiwan, and its most important international backer the United States, for the tensions, a point Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, made again in Beijing, pointing the finger at Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP).

4 years? The USA went from a small Army to a massive one and invaded Europe in 2 1/2 years. Dec 1941 to June 1944. China already has a massive Army, Navy and Air Force. It’s going to take them 4 years? LOL.

Probably propaganda. That would also give Taiwan 4 years to improve their defenses, which are already considerable. Crossing the 100 mile Taiwan Strait is going to be one tough prospect as it is. Imagine another 1000 smart mines sown in the Strait by Taiwan.

A Chinese victory is by no means certain. They need to get the DemonRATs to throw Taiwan under the bus. Even then Japan wouldn’t sit on its hands. Its unlikely that India would either. The last thing they want is a China even more ascendant.

"the closer they are to the island, the stronger the countermeasures"

At a certain point, turn on half of your air defense missile's targeting systems and light every single plane up with multiple systems.

If the pilots don't get heart attacks they will definitely be cleaning their flight suits.

High altitude disbursement of volcanic ash will do a number on airspace infiltrators’ jet engines.

“4 years? The USA went from a small Army to a massive one and invaded Europe in 2 1/2 years. Dec 1941 to June 1944.”

That was 80 years ago when weapons systems were crude and took far less time to design, build and train people to use them. It takes 15 years now to design, build and commission a state of the art submarine and train the crew to operate it.

So, the other day I was reading an article which said Russia recognizes Taiwan as part of Mainland China, and refuses to acknowledge it as an independent nation.

So how about it boys? Is Taiwan independent, or is it still a province of China because other countries don't recognize it?

Taiwan has nukes. They will threaten to hit Three Gorges Dam and China will back off or it will lose a horrific percentage of it's population.

It’s speculation, but Taiwan could easily produce some nukes if they desired. Japan as well.

I’d actually be very surprised in Japan didn’t have components ready for assembly. Taiwan too, by now. Perhaps South Korea. It’d be prudent considering the vicious beast residing nearby.

Well if rumors are true that Taiwan has tactical nukes the ChiComs will likely continue to do what they do best. Sabre rattle.

Sometime earlier this year I had read an article about Taiwan developing nuclear weapons back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. According to the article, their test explosions were rattling nerves in the region, and Reagan said he would give them a proven American bomb design if they would cool it with the tests. They did and he did, or so the article said.

I've heard from military people who should know, that Japan and Taiwan both have ready made bomb cores that can be assembled into a working devices in a day.

I'm pretty sure China knows what it's fooling with and will unlikely launch a serious attack against Taiwan or China.
