When I was a kid in the 50s, chicken pox parties were common. Parents figured getting chicken pox was inevitable so they might as well get it over with as soon as possible once it showed up in the neighborhood. Not sure that conventional wisdom was entirely wrong.

Getting the chicken pox as a child does not guarantee lifelong immunity from the virus. Ask anyone who has suffered through acute, or even worse, chronic shingles later in life.
