Restaurateurs want outdoor dining extension as patrons still fear indoors

Winter is approaching and many restaurants that have relied on outdoor dining to recoup some of their lost business during the pandemic will soon lose their lifeline as temperatures drop....

Restaurateurs across the country this week called on their cities' mayors to extend outdoor dining, warning them that many more closures could be imminent if they don't push for the measure, as the Delta variant compels the majority of patrons to steer clear of indoor dining rooms, new research shows. About 110,000 restaurants and bars have either temporarily or permanently closed during the pandemic, according to National Restaurant Association....

...Specifically, the association is calling on local authorities to extend the period during which outdoor dining is permitted, and to fund outdoor dining infrastructure, including the construction of outdoor seating areas and the purchase heating equipment...

I dunno about outright funding but what's the harm (or cost) in temporarily extending permits for sidewalk/patio seating?

Let the restaurants continue outdoor dining if they want. Why would anyone say no.

I live in Phoenix, where outdoor dining is not uncommon. I don’t know of anyone who is afraid of dining in who is otherwise interested in restaurants. I get the feeling that some parts of the country are more fearful than others.

I was about to say.....sounds like the Karen’s, who want to stay outside and freeze their fannypacks off, while dining.

Have at!

In Texas....we’ve been having crowded indoor dining, and PACKED indoor sports events, and all is fine.

I’m in San Francisco, and I’m not *afraid* of dining inside, and in fact I was doing it occasionally a few months back. But then the city imposed a covid vax mandate with which I am not, and have no intention of, complying. So, for me, it’s outdoor dining or bust.

I’ve been dining indoors since May of last year. I’m failing to see the problem here.

If they’re going to enclose it and heat it, wouldn’t it be considered indoor seating again?

Still afraid to eat inside the restaurant, and with Old Man Winter warming up with daily Ice Baths!

I, as a patron, don't "fear" indoor dining.

Rather, state-imposed ordinances prohibit my dining indoors (since I refuse to "take the Jab").

I would have no problem going inside and giving everyone a kiss on the cheek - I'm not "fearful."

Regards,

Here in North Idaho, indoor restaurants are quite full and doing good business. Few masks. Nobody is fearful.

Just the way they are ... that's why they got the vax, they honestly believe all the Big Media propaganda that this is nothing less than The Black Death, and if they take their mask off for 1 second, they're gonna die immediately

Not everyone who got vaccinated is like that - some HAD TO get it for work or travel - but a lot of those vaccinated really ARE afraid

And that's the irony here ... cities and states are restricting dining & public events to the people who are most afraid of going out, deliberately cutting out those who AREN'T afraid

this is economic idiocy

Why in the Sam Hill does a restaurant have to ask to allow outdoor dining!? That’s some of the dumbest communist crap I’ve ever heard!? People stand for this idiocy!?
If you have outdoor seating and it’s too cold, people won’t sit out there, and all dining will be indoors. Asking for permission! Good grief!

They take away parking. They take away sidewalk access. They inhibit handicapped access. They have lots of health code issues (mostly vermin and bird poop related) While some are cute most are shanty looking. They expose patrons to being injured in traffic. That’s why many would say “no.”

Seems like a no-brainer, the restaurants that bought all that outdoor seating equipment (heaters etc) should be able to use it, now that they have it.

Reading this thread was so depressing. I live in Florida, where we went through a couple of idiotic months of closed restaurants in my city (Jacksonville, with a RINO mayor). But then sanity returned, in stages at least (occupancy limits, etc.) and now it’s all pretty normal.

You see a few people clutching their masks in restaurants, but nobody seems “afraid” to eat inside.

It’s just so hard to see the damage this government-run Covid panic has done to people’s lives. Not only economically, but emotionally and mentally.
