Congress is requiring in its $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill that automakers install monitoring systems in their cars to stop drivers from operating their vehicles while intoxicated.
Monitoring systems to stop drunk drivers would roll out in all new vehicles as early as 2026, according to the new legislation.
Some convicted drunk drivers already have to use breathalyzer devices attached to their vehicles' ignition interlock. By blowing into a tube, the system will disable the vehicle if the individual's blood alcohol level is above the legal threshold.
The Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) program is a public-private partnership partially funded by the government and is one of the groups currently working on two separate alcohol detection systems that would require no action from the driver.
The first is a sensor testing the air within the car to detect a driver's blood alcohol levels - but to work it would need to distinguish the driver's breath from any inebriated passengers.
The second is an infrared touch sensor to detect blood alcohol level through skin that could be built into a steering wheel or start button.
The $1.2 trillion piece of legislation states that 'advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology must be standard equipment in all new passenger motor vehicles,' and that vehicles should be able to 'prevent or limit' operation if a driver is impaired.
It calls for a window of five to six years for the new standard to go into effect.

Watch for them to insist on a discreet, unique digital number for every new car. They will also quietly insist on a “kill switch” so that your vehicle can be disabled through cell phone towers FOR ANY REASON they deem suitable.
They are cloaking this tyranny device in an acceptable wrapper to “stop drunk driving” when in reality they want to stop your car for ANY reason they see fit...including your vocal disagreement with a totalitarian government.

My first prediction is either type will be faulty and mistake prone.
Like the prostate tests for men that have around as many false negatives as the false positives. So they either are or are not something to cause worry and possible painful tissue sample surgery with bleeding and side effects.
Car alcohol testers will be probably be confused by something such as swampy air near a river (as the one that caused heart sac inflammation and painful hospitalization of Bob Dylan), perfume, cologne, odd items in diet (as taking Garlique causes some garlic in your sweat droplets——true story).
So you will be stuck in 10 degree cold in a lot with no way to convince your car that you are a teetotaler. Next day mechanic will conclude: “Lots of ‘em are faulty. It happens.”
My Xfinity cable box problems ended up being caused by the electric box from the socket, the little power converter device like we use on laptops and to recharge shavers. Who knew? Guy said “Lots of ‘em are made faulty at the factory.”
If memory serves someone in Ketosis can set off a breathalyzer so I think the same could happen with these lockout devices.

Some nitwit outbon thebwest coast has attempted litigation to force firearm manufactures to incorporate smart gun tech into all their firearms.

The most likely system to prevent drunken driving is infrared cameras that monitor driver behavior. That technology is already being installed by automakers such as General Motors, BMW and Nissan to track driver attentiveness while using partially automated driver-assist systems.
The cameras make sure a driver is watching the road, and they look for signs of drowsiness, loss of consciousness or impairment.
If signs are spotted, the cars will warn the driver, and if the behavior persists, the car would turn on its hazard lights, slow down and pull to the side of the road.
Abuelsamid said breathalyzers aren’t a practical solution because many people would object to being forced to blow into a tube every time they get into the car. “I don’t think it’s going to go over very well with a lot of people,” he said.
