Belarus's leader has threatened to cut off gas supplies to Europe if sanctions are imposed over an escalating migrant crisis at the country's border.
Thousands of people are at the border with Poland, enduring freezing conditions in the hope of crossing into the European Union.
But on Thursday the country's long-time authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko warned: "If they impose additional sanctions on us... we must respond."
"We are heating Europe, and they are threatening us," he said, referring to a Russian gas pipeline that runs through Belarus and into the EU.
"And what if we halt natural gas supplies? Therefore, I would recommend the leadership of Poland, Lithuanians and other empty-headed people to think before speaking," he added.
His comments raised fresh fears amid worsening natural gas shortages and rising prices in Europe.
The EU's economy commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said the bloc "should not be intimidated" by Mr Lukashenko's threats. More EU sanctions on Belarus could be introduced as early as Monday.
Possible measures include targeting the airport in the capital, Minsk, in an effort to stop international airlines carrying migrants from landing there.

Germany’s gonna be sorry they turned off all their nukes.
Ping.
This could be interesting.
Trump tried to warn them about this. Didn’t take long to materialize. And they could have been getting huge supplies of LNG from the US by now. For their shallow thinking they will get to shiver in the dark this winter.
The US has lots of natural gas we could ship on liquefied natural gas tanker ships. That would be a great answer to ....oh wait, never mind, that’s so 2020.
“Go ahead, we double dog dare ya! We’ll just make up the difference with windmills and solar panels”
Gee, who could have seen THAT coming???......................... beside Stevie Wonder.......
Ruh-Roh!
Meh, European Globalists would rather their Grandmothers and Children freeze to death rather than give up their precious "targeted" sanctions.
OK, everybody. Including and especially that American President, you know, whatsisname, the guy with the mean tweets?
Amazing. This kind of thinking led to 2 world wars. Is there a way out of it? We supply them with our LNG. Is that enough? I’d like to think we’re a more dependable supplier but it will be subject to who’s in the WH.
The U.S. will step in and provide for Europe’s energy needs. Oh wait...we shut down pipelines and won’t allow new drilling.
The European problems are self-inflicted and they should look at themselves as the culprit.
First, Merkel invited everyone from the Middle East to come to Europe.
Then the EU adopted the Dublin agreement, demanding all the Euro countries to accept and give shelter to everyone coming and claiming asylum, prohibiting to turn away the asylum seekers until their cases are reviewed under due procedure.
They are yet to repeal the Dublin agreement, the countries bordering the EU are awashed by hordes of migrants seeking entry and it is allegedly the fault of said countries.
How stupid and sneaky of the EU is it? Lukashenko didn’t invite anyone, EU did.
“This could be interesting.”
Just another border begging for war.
DO IT
It’s ok! All those stupid windmills give them a warm, fuzzy feeling!

My understanding is most of the migrants are Iraqi Kurds departing three main points in Iraq’s Kurdish region: Irbil, Shiladze and Sulaymaniyah. They wish to cross into Germany. Three German states border Poland: Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Saxony. They pay between $14,000 to $17,000,including visas, flights and being smuggled overland once in Europe to their destination.
Correct me if your understanding is different.
I heard that most of them are Kurds, true.
I also heard that they are taking the route as a cheaper and safer alternative to Med boat cruises.
According to the Dublin agreement, they aren’t allowed to pass to Germany though. Poland is obliged to house them and process their asylum claims.
Organized crime is definitely involved in one way or another. I have no idea why it is a problem when it takes place in Belarus, but okay in Italy or Turkey. Maybe the Turkish coyotes don’t like competition.
Belarus is allowing Kurds in visa-free by the way.
