(CNN)In honor of Veterans Day, congressional Democrats reintroduced legislation Thursday that would provide GI Bill benefits to descendants of Black World War II veterans.

The GI Bill Restoration Act was introduced in the House by Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina and Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts. Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia is set to introduce the legislation in the Senate, according to a news release on Clyburn's website.

...If passed, the bill would extend to descendants and surviving spouses of Black WWII veterans access to the VA Loan Guaranty Program, which provides assistance for buying and building homes, and the Post-911 GI Bill educational assistance, which provides financial assistance for school or job training. The legislation also establishes a Blue Ribbon Panel "to study inequities in the distribution of benefits and assistance administered to female and minority members of the Armed Forces and provide recommendations on additional assistance to repair those inequities," according to the release....

No - many many enlisted families, spent half their careers overseas where access to 'benefits' and medical care for their dependents was limited at best. Most enlisted couldn't afford to send their kids to college, especially if they were outside conus. Life post-war was tough for everyone and medical care was hardly advanced. "Post-Vietnam era" "volunteer forces" had their VA benefits cut too, such as educational benefits, death pensions and death benefits, after Ford killed eligibility for the program in '75: https://www.nytimes.com/1975/05/08/archives/ford-ends-vietnam-era-and-terminates-gi-wartime-benefits.html

Let me get this straight: They want to confer benefits upon descendants solely on the basis of their race.

Yeah, that’ll pass muster.

Since I cannot qualify for these benefits based on my Dad’s honorable service, can I get them by identifying as a descendent of a black veteran?

Once again, whites need not apply. You probably could get benefits, but not as a white person. According to a recent story, many whites were lying on application forms, probably saying they were a different ethnic group, probably American Indians. They know, being white, is a disadvantage.

When do the descendants of the Irish who came over during the Irish famine and were treated reprehensibly get goodies?

Descendents. Hmmmm.

Does that just mean children (and surviving spouses)? Or does it include grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, ad nauseum?

this is simply wrong.

It is very clearly a racist policy. Dressing it up in the shrouds of veterans does not make it less so.

access to this prosperity was limited for Black World War II veterans who were denied full access to these benefits by mostly-white state and local Veterans Administrations

Is this claim true? What is the evidence?

Won’t turn out good. Analogous to adding more fuel to a runaway engine that did not have a governor ( speed regulating one) to start with. More damage to the engine and it’s environs than good.
Engine is not a good standin nor is gas…. How about hogs and feed?

It's apparently true. Here's a history.com story that talks about it:

If those benefits were denied to their ancestor solely on the basis of their race?

I somehow doubt that any vet in the last 50 years has been denied the benefit.

I remember my father, a memeber of the 1st Special Engineering Brigade, haivng fought in North Africa, Sicily, Salareno, Normandy, and the Battle of the Bulge, being denied a hearing aide by the VA. No sympathy here for their cause.

I see. Your logic appears to support slave reparations.

Bravo.

Btw, I’m still waiting for my check from the British government for the crimes against my ancestors... /s
