Navajo Nation Bans Sale of Tobacco: Industry ‘Colonized a Product that Was Sacred’
Breitbart ^ | 11/16/21 | Penny Starr

A Navajo who studies the use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and chewing tobacco by Native Americans commented on the Navajo Nation’s permanent ban on the sale of tobacco, a product first cultivated by Native Americans but was “colonized” by white farmers.

“I think it’s just really educating our communities about what the industry – I keep saying the industry because it’s really them that has put these products in the hands of our young people,” Patricia Nez Henderson said in an interview with taxpayer-funded National Public Radio’s (NPR) Weekend Edition Sunday. They colonized a product that was sacred, right?” “And the tobacco industry basically put more additives in these plants to make it more addictive,” Henderson said. Henderson said the tobacco industry has “targeted” Native Americans. “The Air is Life Coalition as well as Team Navajo Coalition have been working at this for the last 13 years,” Hnderson said. “You know, the tobacco industry has really targeted American Indian tribes for a very, very long time.” “They understand tribal sovereignty, and they understand all the economic opportunities that tribes are trying to do right now, including gaming,” Henderson said, who added that the ban including no smoking in Navajo casinos.

“So when we started moving forward with this legislation in 2008, the elected leaders understood the importance, but it was vetoed by the president, President Shirley, and his main response was that it would decrease the revenues of gaming by 30 percent, which, interestingly, it’s the same tactic that the industry used against the hotels and the restaurants when, you know, all these industries were going smoke-free. So we really had to address that in this movement this last year.”

Smoking is racist and cultural appropriation. In jr high they showed an anti smoking film to us young skulls full of mush, narrated by Dick van Dyke who called tobacco the RED MAN'S REVENGE.

these tribes think that what some did on the far east coast somehow is related to them....from what I understand, the tribes fought and battled and cannibalized each other....

so the Spanish brought horses over....should the tribes now remove all painted horses from their history and culture?...I think so...they culturally appropriated something that did not belong to them....of course I'm saying this tongue in check.

Didn’t some of the tribes consider people outside the tribe not to be people?

Need to object to the Navaho colonization of Spanish horses.

I'm inclined to believe that Native Americans smoke wild grass...before Europe brought over some actual tobacco.

HOWEVER...since they say they introduced it to the "White Man"...reparations may be in order....TO US....for introducing us to this dangerous product,

So ‘banning’ a product still requires ‘educating’ the population? Typical liberal mindset. They create a situation requiring policing, then because they are too incompetent to actually do that job, they have to spend gobs of money employing more liberals to persuade the population not to engage in using the illegal substance. (While at the same time arguing for the de-decriminalization of marijuana)

Without any research, I seriously doubt that any Navaho in the desert Southwest ever saw or heard of tobacco prior to white man introducing the iron horse. (And native Americans never saw horses until they were imported from Europe.)

Did the Navajos cultivate tobacco? I had the impression it was a south eastern plant. Did the Navajos use some other plant?

Oh, I should point out, that the Navajo crossed over to the America by boat, after the land bridge fell back into the sea, arriving in the southwest around 1300 AD. This was ten thousand years or longer after humans first inhabited the Americas, and only a few hundred years prior to the arrival of Europeans.

According to CRT, the winners of the second to last wars are the rightful owners of their place; as opposed to the winners of the last wars, who are to be considered to be invaders and colonizers.

According to the Declaration of Independence, government gains its rightful power from the consent of the governed, NOT from who won what war. Thus, we seek to end the endless cycle of wars of conquest, colonization, slavery and all forms of oppression. NOT continually re-fight the last war. We were and remain the true revolution in the world’s history. Replacing the rule of conquest with the rule of law.

I like to whip out the churchwarden pipe and fill the bowl of sweet Cavendish at Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.

Love the warning label.

(And native Americans never saw horses until they were imported from Europe.)

It wasn’t until around 1680 that the Pueblo’s came into possession of horses after running the Spanish back to Mexico. Until then most if not all the tribes were still walking. From there the horse population expanded and multiple Plains tribes had them.
