PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A ski mountain is set to remove a derogatory term for Native American women from its name — two decades after state law eliminated the slur from names of communities and public landmarks.
The leader of a group of investors that’s buying Big Squaw Mountain Resort in Greenville vowed to retire the name upon completion of the purchase, the Portland Press Herald reported.
“It’s going to change. There is no doubt about that,” said Perry Williams, managing partner at Big Lake Development Co.
“It’s about time,” Penobscot National Tribe Ambassador Maulian Dana said of the prospective owners’ plans.
The mountain’s name was changed from Big Squaw Mountain to Big Moose Mountain after the state banned the word from public place names like towns, mountains and lakes in 2000. But the offensive word had carried on at the ski resort because it’s a privately owned business.
The word “squaw,” derived from the Algonquin language, may have once simply meant “woman,” but over generations, the word morphed into a misogynist and racist term to disparage Indigenous women, according to experts.

I won't be offended. I promise.
I have never heard the term squaw used in a derogatory sense, and I am surrounded by lifelong enthusiasts of non PC humor. In fact I have only ever heard a single female indian joke and it would only be funny to a Reno native

To what? Squaw Mountains?
No, Obama Overlook
are you in western Maryland? I went to college in Frostburg, and I remember mountains by those names.
Squaw Valley is now called Palisades Tahoe. It will always be Squaw Valley to me.
“She will ALWAYS BE KNOWN AS BIG SQUAW MOUNTAIN by REAL PEOPLE!”
I went back to my home town, and found out they renamed Squaw Creek to Ioway Creek. I asked about that, and the only people who use that are students at the university even though all the public schools teach the new name.
That would be them, yes.
I’m old.
I remember their other names.
:D
So, a squab bit my sister???
Best name already taken, Grand Teton.
“So “squaw” has become “moose”. Isn’t that demeaning to women to call them moose.”
A squaw once bit my sister. Doesn’t have the same ring to it.
squaw means woman.
It didn’t morph into anything.
Big Squaw Mountain Resort has been a losing proposition since its opening in the 1960s. Even a major paper company could not sink enough money into the mountain to make it profitable.
This article outlines the history of the resort with pictures of the good, bad and ugly.

This is too far away from any major market to be successful. You pretty much have to drive another three hours north of three of Maine’s premier ski destinations to get to Greenville.
The new buyers are the next set of suckers who will lose a couple of million or more trying to make this work.
Simple just return to the original spelling. Woe-to-men
The Washington Football Mountain
WTF? Sounds like BS to me....
That is not far-fetched. In some Women's Studies programs the profs insist on the spelling being womyn.
