Increase the police force? In a liberal bastion like Oakland? Good luck with that. A friend who works for a major law enforcement agency in SoCal says applications have cratered. He says they went from around 20,000 applications per year to just over 3,000. They are either going to start hiring a lot of people who don’t belong in uniform or they won’t keep up with attrition.
“Additionally, the low number was reportedly the first time police staffing had fallen below the minimum 678 officers are required in accordance with a 2014 tax measure that finances portions of public safety programs in Oakland.”
The city is collecting a tax which they can no longer collect if the number of officers falls below 678. It now has. They are scrambling to protect their tax revenue by hiring more officers, because otherwise they’re going to have to figure out a way to illegally keep collecting the tax, probably by coming up with a BS legal argument why their illegal tax collecting is legal, and then tying it up in court.
The idea of obeying the law by not collecting the tax with less than 678 officers is probably not even on their radar screen.
