MILWAUKEE -- Harley-Davidson will take its electric motorcycle division public through a blank-check company, valuing the enterprise that has been part of the Harley for 10 years at $1.77 billion.

The news gave a jolt to long-suffering shares of Harley-Davidson, which jumped 12% before the opening bell Monday.

I was thinking that an electric motorcycle might be kinda cool because I was reading about one that "goes highway speeds" and gets about 100 miles to one charge. However, after that 100 miles, it takes 8 hours more or less to recharge the battery. Hm. That doesn't sound good, even if you carry an extra battery, right? Two hundred miles and you're down for at least 8 hours. Better find a place to hole up!

I don't feel sorry for HD, though. They pretty much dug their own grave. The end of an era!

gets about 100 miles to one charge

How many miles to a gallon does a typical mid sized bike get and how big is the gas tank...that's what I would want to know. So let's say you have a 4-5 gallon tank and get 40 miles per gallon. That gives you a 160-200 mile cruising range. I would think that after 4 hours on a bike you'd want to stretch your legs and fill up. But if the fill up takes 8 hours after 100 miles, it's not a long ride.

With an electric bike, where does the VARROOOM come from? The saying USED TO be, “I’d rather have a sister in a whorehouse, than a brother on a Jap bike!” Wouldn’t that include electric ones?

I thought having an electric bike would be good for stealth operations.

It would take you weeks to get to Sturges if you were riding from CA.

Yeah, the math doesn’t add up. My old Honda (currently a paperweight in the driveway) could go about 110 miles on a single tank of gas, which was (if I recall) 2.2 gallons. That’s great mileage, but before that I had a BMW R/90 and it didn’t get that great mileage, but the tank was HUGE. So I would just cruise and cruise on that bike but on the Honda I would have to keep an eye on the odometer to make sure I stopped at a gas station in time.

I thought having to stop every 100 miles or so to get gas was, you know, sort of a drag, but having to stop for 8 hours every 100 miles - um, no.

I wonder how big the amp and speakers are to create the macho exhaust sound.

My standard ride is close to 200 miles and that’s for lunch somewhere.

If it were cheap enough, an electric motorcycle with a range of 100 miles might make a good commuter vehicle.

Commuting and other short trips are the only thing EVs will be good for without some breakthrough in tech. No such thing as driving/riding 60mph for 8 hours until they have a 480 mile range.

We moved from FL to MO ten years ago. I drove a 1 ton hauling a 35 foot 5th wheel that had a couple thousand pounds of stuff in it, all my tools, welder, compressor and much household stuff. My wife drove a 1 ton, 14 foot box truck hauling a car trailer with a 4x4 S10 Blazer on it and light items in the box.

Took us 4 days. It would take 4 weeks to do that with EVs.

A guy I used to hang out with was a Harley mechanic. The guys at the shop had a variety of contemptuous terms they used for “the bros” who tinkered with their bikes trying to get them to be louder than they already were, with resulting damage to the engine. Of a very expensive bike.

Yeah, but that’s all it would be good for: Riding around town in traffic. Breathing exhaust. Whee.

Thats not so bad, I only get about 100 miles on a full tank on my Antique Yamaha, gets me to Newcombs Ranch and back on one tank.
